Finsterforst Find New Pinnacles in Pagan Metal on "Zerfall"

zerfall

Finsterforst are back, but know that this band’s brand of pagan metal is a far cry from the Paganfest school of drunken, arms-linked-and-swinging folk dancing fodder. The tragic, punishing music found on their upcoming album Zerfall finds the band regaining their footing after a recent stylistic departure.

This is the music of old stories and people gathered around fires. Watch an exclusive video premiere of the album’s title track below.

Continuing in Quorthon’s footsteps, the deliberately paced, balladic metal found within “Zerfall” never moves beyond a slow head-bob, but in that they are able to build a constant, monolithic atmosphere which defines the album as a whole. There is no goofiness here, nor anything resembling happiness. Rather, Finsterforst’s heroic saga is a cataclysm of forward motion and outward expanse.

To this listener, “Zerfall” is a new pinnacle in pagan metal: a proper ballad which weaves the tragedies found within tales of old.

Zerfall releases August 2nd via Napalm Records.
