Fange - "Cour Martiale" (Song Premiere)

Fange Purge cover

Nothing gets me going quite like a heavy, conservative bout of minimalist sludge/doom metal. Though there are a few who worship at the altar of Grief, or maybe listen to Today Is The Day 45s at 33 rpm, those who understand the style and proverbially “get it right” bring out the most ignorant beast within my frail, tiny frame. Having already proved their mettle with the brief, heavy Poisse EP and 19-minute single-track noise-doom odyssey Skapheusis, Fange‘s new lineup, which now features Throatruiner mastermind and Calvaiire frontman M. Jungbluth, takes this juggernaut to a new level of doom destruction.

The queasy notes which mark “Cour Martiale” (Court Martial), and thereby Purge, bottom out with a powerful wash of massive, minimal, aggressive doom. Though briefly venturing into a more stereotypical d-beat affair, a slow, disgusting dirge is the dull lantern which guides us through “Cour Martiale”‘s six and a half minutes, though the disorienting, oppressive atmosphere offered makes the journey seem that much longer. With all the blues, post-rock, and other atmospheric influences which worm their way into other sludge bands, Fange raises their 1991 banner high. Come to Grief, destroy yourself to Fange.

Purge won’t officially be out until September 2, which is only three months away at this point, but the impatient can now preorder this ridiculous new album from Throatruiner Records (EU/ROW/USA) and Lost Pilgrims Records. Scroll below for a North American exclusive first listen of album opener “Cour Martiale.”

From the label:
“Founded in 2013 in Rennes (western France) by Huata’s bassist B.Moreau with the will of pushing sludge in its more abrasive, mind-numbing corners, FANGE’s debut EP «Poisse» revealed a band with an uncommon take of the genre. Re-appropriating the classic Swedish death metal sound with detours to harsh noise, crust or metallic hardcore, the band now fully realize their sound on their first album «Purge», strengthened by a new line-up that features drummer B.Louvet and vocalist M.Jungbluth (Calvaiire).
With only one guitar throwing out monstrous HM-2 fueled riffs, stomach-kicking yet versatile drum work and bile-gargling, mutilated vocals, «Purge» marks a filthier turn in the band’s uncompromising wall of sound. Entirely recorded by KKP (Abjvration, Huata, Ataraxie…) and enhanced by ear-piercing layers of noise, these six tracks are an exhausting aural experience. This is ignorant music for the Educated Man. For fans of : irrational feelings of guilt, Tom G. Warrior vocal gimmicks, body negativity.”
