False Releases New Single "A Victual to Our Dead Selves" from Upcoming Sophomore Full-Length

false portent

False, the black metal sextet from Minnesota, unveiled the first single today (via Revolver) from their sophomore full-length Portent which releases officially on July 1st. Listener reactions to Untitled, the band’s debut from four years ago, were exceptionally strong; likewise, the anticipation for Portent has been growing gradually but steadily as the years have passed. We were offered a very small taste of new False two years ago with the Hunger EP, but with a runtime less than nine minutes, it sowed even deeper seeds of anticipation instead of answering any questions.

Now, though, it is finally time to dive into brand-new, fully featured False, and for sure, “A Victual to Our Dead Selves” sees the outfit at their most dynamic ever. Outright aggression has been scaled back for a more nuanced approach, featuring greater diversity and separation among the guitars, keyboards, and blisteringly fast drumming. Rachel’s vocals, on the other hand, see an uptick in fervor and fury, positioning Portent as both a straight-on heavy-hitter and a luscious slow-burner. Songwriting complexity has virtually doubled on this new song, which will likely play across the whole album, solidifying False as veritable ripper-aparters of tradition and convention in this subgenre.

Exciting stuff for sure. Let’s hope the remainder of Portent shares the wicked intensity of the new song and gels nicely as the next narrative chapter in this band’s bright future.

Portent releases July 1st via Gilead Media.
