Falls of Rauros Lurches Forward with “New Inertia,” New Single from Upcoming Fifth Full-Length

falls of rauros cover

Earlier today, Falls of Rauros dropped “New Inertia” (via Decibel), the third track from their upcoming fifth full-length Patterns in Mythology. The anticipation for Patterns in Mythology is vying quite well with that of upcoming albums from labelmates Yellow Eyes and False, and for damn good reason: Falls of Rauros has over the last 14 years honed their brand of long-form, opus-magnitude black metal into the sharpest of spears. With this new album, they finally lob that spear toward the horizon, and with one goddamn hell of a throw.

With its roller-coaster ascent, sparkling melodies, and dreamy ethos, “New Inertia” evidences Falls of Rauros’s delicacy in sewing swaths of beauty into their music — not as a juxtaposition to the blasting black metal they so gleefully wield (especially at the track’s midpoint) but rather a core component of it to begin with. The band, too, was gutsy enough to use a powerful clean-cut guitar solo where a more typical climax would have gone, a move definitely appreciated by worn ears. With these dynamics in mind, “New Inertia” is actually supremely effortless in its full-range impact, satisfying both desires for great riffage and wondrous emotionality within a genre which, when interpreted just so, can deliver like none other. Patterns in Mythology for sure will end up requiring some close, deep listens, but they could potentially be unforgettable ones.

Patterns in Mythology releases July 19th via Gilead Media.
