Exclusive Track Premiere: Temple of Dagon – “The Wandering Spirit”

When you see Temple of Dagon play a show, whether it’s at a smelly downtown dive bar or an even smellier South Central tire yard, you know they stand out among the pack in Los Angeles. The laser-precise riffing of Kyle Hertz and Jacob Smyle zips right by while Dwane Burgess doesn’t merely sing—he goes on a fucking rampage. If he’s not covered in sweat by the end of the set, you certainly are.
It’s a relief then that Temple of Dagon’s newest EP, Revelations of the Spirit, has ably captured their live fury onto a platter of vinyl. As a concept release, it certainly risked an overwrought fate however. The EP follows the existential journey of a character only known as “The Horrid King” as he learns to accept and embrace his own twisted nature.
In “The Wandering Spirit,” the king is at the apex of his crisis and his turmoil manifests itself in Nelson Lopez’s frantic skanks and Alex LiCausi’s utterly gnarly basslines. The undeniable highlight comes right at the three-minute mark, where the band smothers a ‘70s Priest-style stomp with a crunchy, straight-up nasty layer of crust. Temple of Dagon are an exciting proposition from the comfort of home, viscous and volatile in-person and pretty damn dirty. Sounds like Los Angeles alright.
