Ewig.Englich "Abend" But Don't Break

ewig.endlich

German quintet Ewig.Endlich. bring a mournful despondence to the surging and closely linked genres of blackgaze and post-hardcore. Their upcoming debut full-length Auf Grund is positioned squarely on the hardcore end of the spectrum, especially when considering the shouted-over-screamed delivery of vocalist Simon Albers. Premiering exclusively here is a track from the new record, titled “Abend.”

An abundance of sludge influence can be found in Ewig.Endlich.’s blackened post-hardcore murk, and, like many of the other tracks on Auf Grund, “Abend” is a dirge-like slog in the best of ways. The solemn opening procession is soon blasted apart as drummer Benjamin Rohnke mercilessly pummels way under the howling strings of bandmates Maik Stiens and Sören Judtka.

Only after the song’s first act does the tempest finally yield, paring itself down to its raw materials. This at last provides the platform for Albers to unleash his larynx-busting voice, halfway between a shout and a snarl, an abomination of gut-twisting grief, angst, and regret.

The band released an earlier version of “Abend” as a single in January of 2016, and, while the song has since been redone for Auf Grund, the early version is worth an eventual listen if just to appreciate the band’s evolution.

Auf Grund will be released on April 13th. Pre-orders on vinyl and CD are available via Dedication Records, or in digital format direct from Ewig.Endlich. on Bandcamp, where they are streaming the album’s second track “In Anderen Spiegeln.”
