Death-Doom, Encapsulating and Bleak: Cthonica's "Act II: The Lantern" Lights the Way

I wanted something especially nasty, and I got it: Cthonica‘s monstrous debut Typhomanteia: Sacred Triarchy of Spiritual Putrefaction. Equal parts raw and atmospheric, this Venezuelan outfit’s foray into the dingy realms of doom-driven death metal pretty much single-handedly open the gates of hell and begs for an endless night. Characterized by guttural, misanthropic growls and a human stew of harsh riffage, the album tears space and time in an effort to sink your brain into a claustrophobic mess. Typhomanteia: Sacred Triarchy of Spiritual Putrefaction is all-encompassing, totalizing, and relentless in its assault on your comfort levels. It is hard to listen to. It is unyielding. You could even say it’s ugly… though, to me, the band’s furious dedication to their own mighty pummel is something truly to behold. We’ve got the album’s second track “Act II: The Lantern” streaming exclusively below; trust me, the rest of the album, too, is a living nightmare of cacophony and destruction.

Typhomanteia: Sacred Triarchy of Spiritual Putrefaction releases October 25th via Sentient Ruin (US LP), Caligari Records (tape), and Clavis Secretorvm (EU LP and CD).
