Cryptopsy's "Phobophile" Rendered in Legos

YouTube and metal are both storehouses for unrewarded effort. Why do people assemble 90-second supercuts of Don Draper saying “what?” Why do people learn to speedpick at 300 BPM? What recompense do they hope to earn? I don’t know, but I’m glad they do it.
This video combines the two to great effect. Some YouTube user—he calls himself LegonardoDaFinci—has put together a stop-motion music video for Cryptopsy’s “Phobophile”, from None So Vile. The video consists of ‘live’ footage interspersed with a grindhouse horror story. Eventually the two threads collide for a Metalocalypse-style bloodbath. The ‘stage’ sequences are hilariously on point. Great little details abound: Jon Levasseur holding his guitar up to his amp to create feedback; Flo Mounier’s hat flying off his head as he digs into a beat; Lord Worm feeding the audience worms.
The amount of work that must’ve gone into this video stupefies me. Its creator used an iPhone to shoot each frame. The description reports that the ‘stage’ scenes feature a frame rate of 10 frames per second, while the ‘story’ scenes have a 6-frame-per-second rate. There are about 5 minutes and 50 seconds of animation here; assuming that video splits its time evenly between stage and story, that’s 2,800 iPhone photos. Since there’s more stage footage than story footage, the actual count was probably higher.
LegonardoDaFinci has only two other YouTube videos to his credit—an alternate take of the “Phobophile” vid with his own instrumental cover (!) providing audio, and a Batman Lego animation. Perhaps he’ll create some more stop-motion metal videos with different bands and toys. Bolt Thrower animated with green army men? Mithras animated with Star Wars figurines? Striborg animated with Pogs? The possibilities are endless.
