Comatose Vigil A.K. Teases “Evangelium Nihil” with 18-Minute Title Track

Comatose Vigil may be back, but not “A.D.” as other bands have denoted. After a series of splits and reunions, the Russian funeral doom unit never in fact suffered a conclusive death. After many lineup changes and dissents within the band, vocalist A.K. iEzor picked up the pieces of what remained to carry on the legacy of a vision. What has existed since 2017 is the appropriately-named Comatose Vigil A.K. After a self-titled demo earlier this year, the trio, which welcomes help from David Unsaved of Georgia’s Ennui and John Devos of Seattle’s Blood Atonement, is set to release Evangelium Nihil. Including the single originally released in demo form, the album stands as four towering tracks from the cavernous pits of dismal wonder. Starting off on a strong note with a title track roughly four times the length of the industry standard, Comatose Vigil A.K. suggests that the band’s slightly smaller manifestation as a three piece is no less all-consuming.

While many funeral doom artists seem to tackle the shambling that walks the earth above, Comatose Vigil A.K. fearlessly explores what lies below. With orchestral keyboards announcing the entrance of a demon into its ruling circle of hell, Evangelium Nihil’s chilling embrace suggests that clinging to life at all costs is a wise course of action. iEzor serves as the guide through the fiery pits of bellowed blasphemy. His message goes a bit haywire as radio frequency crackles through his pulpit microphone mid-track, but eventually, organized chaos is restored with symphonic sacrilege. Interestingly, this hellscape is achieved without explicit appeals to the dark lord himself. Instead, this slow swim through thick lava accomplishes what it needs to with steady cymbals and a few well-placed screeches of torture. Overall, while the light of this vigil’s candle has come close to burning out, it has apparently evaded the oxygen at the surface to remain as searing hot as ever.

Evangelium Nihil drops December 14 via Non Serviam Records. Follow Comatose Vigil A.K. on Facebook.
