Chron Goblin - "The Wailing Sound" (Premiere)

unnamed

Canada’s Chron Goblin don’t leave much up to the imagination when it comes to names. If you’re not into stoner metal, or music that pays homage to the less urban side of rock music, beware. If that’s in your wheelhouse, however, then the album’s upcoming album, Backwater, deserves your attention. With that in mind, here’s a good long taste of what the band has to offer.

“’The Wailing Sound’ is one of my favorite songs that came out of our sessions in Portland with Adam Pike,” explains vocalist Josh Sandulak. “It’s the longest track on the album, opener for Side B, and it really changes the mood of the second half of the record, transitioning from pummeling rockers to a brooding and melancholic dirge. We wanted to experiment with dynamics on this track and to evoke some of our darker and more melodic tendencies. The song is an ethereal journey into one’s own heart and mind, touching on themes of degradation, loss and the ability to adapt, and I feel like we really captured that with the tenseness between the verses and choruses.

This was the first time we worked with another vocalist in the studio and it was a pleasure to have Andrea Vidal from Portland band Holy Grove sing backup on the song. She added a mournful and haunting atmosphere to it and turned the song into a bit of a dialogue, as opposed to simply a lamentation. Andrea was a pro in the studio – we all felt goosebumps the moment she sang her first line and we knew that this song was going to be a standout on the record.”
