The sun will kill you. It is the most absolute of endings, one that dwarfs any man-made apocalypse. Even the most optimistic view of the arc of history touches down here. The sun, one day, will swallow Earth whole. Maybe we avoid drowning in boiling water, maybe we don’t unleash a hail of bombs with a fragment of the sun’s own nuclear potential. None of this matters to the ball of fire at the center of our solar system. Any evidence of our better nature, or our immense fuckups, will burn all the same.

That fact is an oppressively heavy one, which makes it good company for Below The Sun. The Russian post-metal band pull no punches in depicting the destructive power of their namesake on “Dawn For Nobody.” Throughout the video, even before the last remaining humans buckle under the unbearable heat, the world exists in a sweaty orange haze. No vegetation survives, and all of man’s technological achievements are left to rust. Here, the song’s tranquil beginning acts as last whimper of life before the crushing finale snuffs out hope entirely.

A great deal of the video’s power comes from that unsparing conclusion, but the details leading up to that moment are just as compelling. The humans hardly run from their inevitable fate, even as they descend deep into Earth to escape the heat; their backs are bent and skin shimmers in the heat. Once underground, they are surrounded by the wreck of their own industry, a tomb of their own making.

Check out the video below, along with statements from animator Gusev Dmitri and the band.

From Dmitri:

Nothing lasts forever in the universe. Everything is constantly changing and evolving. Our day will come, and the sun we are so used to will come to the end of its cycle of existence. The leftovers of mankind will be forced to live its last days underground or come to the surface and meet the end of the world face to face.

From the band:

This song is about the relationships between a big and a medium object in the universe, about the relationships between stars, planets, and humans. About helplessness of mankind in the face of a natural disasters, which are happening all the time in space. About a fragile life, which is constantly in danger to disappear. And one day this life will cease to exist. This now barren planet will be burnt to a crisp by the merciless rays of an enlarged sun. And then, it’s a dawn for nobody.
