Behold Power Pop Mastodon on "Show Yourself"

Mastodon

Atlanta progressive sludge outfit Mastodon continue to dabble in pop music on their newest song “Show Yourself”, the second track from their upcoming album Emperor of Sand. The band’s previous flirtations with almost juvenile accessibility include multilayered vocal harmonies on “The Creature Lives”, and twee cheerleader backing on “Aunt Lisa” were jarring moments that stood out on those albums for the wrong reasons. By contrast, “Show Yourself” doubles down on immediacy, not gimmicks. It runs for three minutes and opens with the chorus, an infectious vocal hook by drummer Brann Dailor. Structurally, there’s not much progressive or sludgy about it, and while it’s a further deviation from their norm than the previous single, “Sultan’s Curse”, on first brush it may have more staying power.

Mastodon’s new album Emperor of Sand comes out March 31 via Reprise Records. Follow Mastodon on Facebook.

In April, Mastodon hit the road with Eagles of Death Metal & Russian Circles. Check out all dates HERE.
