Bastard Noise/Sickness - 'Deaths Door' (Premiere)

It might seem appropriate for there to be some synergy between powerelectronics and powerviolence, given both genres’ predilections for power and harsh sounds that abuse more than entice the listener. Bastard Noise has been in the harsh noise game since the 1990s and, as the name might suggest, is the brainchild of Eric Wood, most notably of the prolific powerviolence cadre Man Is The Bastard. On its latest release, Death’s Door, Bastard Noise collaborate with fellow harsh noise wallers Sickness to strikes what a former employer of mine might call “the perfect fusion of aesthetics and brutality.” It’s abrasive, but deep and rich too; guttural grunts permeate the grinding and feedback, and low drones underscore trebly screeches and wailing sirens. And there’s none of the usual powerelectronics nihilistic circle-jerking either. Bastard Noise has a point to make about the decaying state of our planet and the terrifying future we may or may not behold, not juvenile rants about misogyny or serial killers. Harsh noise may not be your thing, but after an apocalyptic election cycle permeated by paranoia and foreboding, those inclined towards the wall may find it to their liking.
