The Refreshing Black Metal Purity of Ayyur's "The Lunatic Animal"

For all the hyper atmospheric, experimental music to which I foray on a daily basis, sometimes I just really want to listen to black metal. No gaudiness, no adventurousness, just… riffs and anger. That isn’t to say being experimental is bad; rather, it’s important to remember what is real. There is validity in that whole “know your roots” saying, especially in the world of music.

Ayyur is black metal. No additives, no bullshit. Listen to an exclusive stream of their new EP The Lunatic Creature below.

Featuring former Deathspell Omega vocalist Shaxul on drum duties, the Tunisian trio of Angra Mainyu, Dagon, and Shaxul perform a powerful, psychotic brand of melodic, mid-paced black metal. Trimming the fat of modernity from their approach, The Lunatic Creature is an exercise in manic purity. As stated earlier, Ayyur is black metal — black metal in its most distilled form. Hearing this kind of music sans any postured trappings makes it all the more refreshing.

Sometimes the most obvious representation of a style of music can be its greatest escape, especially when performed at such a high caliber.

The Lunatic Creature is out Friday, November 30th, on Sentient Ruin Laboratories and Vendetta Records.
