Ancient Hostility’s Self-Titled Debut Indicts Humanity’s Self-Betrayal

ancient hostility

There’s nothing more terrifying and tantalizing than the concept of voluntary human extinction. Considering how the impending floods from the melting ice caps are being held back solely by a collection of confiscated straws, the problem is ultimately the solution. Humbling us even further, Ancient Hostility is presenting their debut self-titled album to remind us that the ruthlessness of humanity’s sword will mark the pages of history until bloodshed has drenched every sheet. Each chapter of the duo’s dynamism describes another reason why us slightly-Naired primates are destined to become bones modeled in museums by whatever sentient race is bestowed upon our galaxy next. With vocals grand enough to fill the entire universe and instrumentals sturdy enough to put a few dents in the moon, their upcoming album Ancient Hostility is a reminder that misanthropy is not artificially conjured, but rather, spotted as plainly as the high tides.

Collectively, Ancient Hostility is new to metal listeners, but its members are veterans of the force. Ukrainian multi-instrumentalist SadVoice is best known under the depressive solo moniker Inner Suffering, as well as Absence of Joy and Apathetic Grief. With a staggering amount of full lengths under his belt since 2014 just as Inner Suffering alone, it may seem unfathomable that SadVoice is adding another venture to his arsenal; however, his industrious ways suggest that crafting despondent atmosphere provides a much-needed expulsion from the self. Holding down vocal contributions so heavily that they might sink into the Earth’s core, Imber, of Aludra notoriety, is well-versed in awakening experimental onslaught dedicated to the cult of the cosmos.

Her outstretched vocals particularly glow within the context of Ancient Hostility; SadVoice provides a backdrop that is boundary-pushing but approachable, creeping but graceful.

Between Imber’s third eye for what is lurking in galaxies far and SadVoice’s groundedness in stark realities, Ancient Hostility presents humanity’s vast meaninglessness. As the foreboding riffs of “Disavowed” are reborn into the piercing, curdled cries of “Immurement,” the journey plows onward with bass-heavy hypnosis, driving the hammer into the bone shards of an enemy long since forgotten. While certain arpeggios tease a thirst for optimism, they ultimately peter downward into the depths from which they were pulled. The dizzying chaos of “Drawn and Quartered” takes a stylish approach to second wave black metal; the demon behind the microphone has possessed the human hand to continually strike, strike, strike.

As the few survivors shamble through clouds of post-apocalyptic smog, soft feedback rings out unceremoniously, demoting us back to simple specks of stardust.
