Mythical Wolves: All My Sins Unveil “Vukov Totem”

all my sins

Lest you be sedated by the haunting samples which begin All My Sins‘ upcoming debut album Pra Sila – Vukov Totem, be warned — it’s a trap. Ten seconds is all the listener is given before the band unleashes their mighty onslaught. Strap on those elbow pads, because we’re premiering the album’s opening track “Vukov Totem” right here.

“Vukov Totem” functions as a sampler platter of all the delicacies one can anticipate on the album, each of the track’s movements showcasing one of All My Sins’ many competencies as songwriters. Despite the song’s generous runtime, the minutes blur together due to the band’s adeptness at assembling the many passages into a coherent, self-propelling journey.

All My Sins apply time and tempo changes with a liberal hand, frequently pushing themselves into unanticipated territory, yet always with a steady eye on cohesiveness. The first half sees them ping-ponging back and forth between savage blackened thrash and slow, solemn triplets, resolving into a midpoint transition from which the group explore new avenues of attack. The breakdown is somber, with funeral march toms pounding under layers of drone as the band begin the arduous climb to the song’s ultimate end.

Under it all, vocalist and bassist Nav Cosmos holds the music down with an ample helping of low-end melody on bass that goes a long way toward contrasting All My Sins from their genre peers. Nav Cosmos’ approach to his instrument adds depth and character that’d be sorely missed without his prominent yet tasteful placement in the album’s mix.

Pra Sila – Vukov Totem may be the group’s first full-length effort, but All My Sins are no newborn babes. Nav Cosmos and guitarist V are longtime creative partners, having released two demos in the early 2000s. From then, All My Sins fell by the wayside until 2016, when they issued their Lunar / Solar EP with the aid of session drummer Nemir. For Pra Sila – Vukov Totem, they’ve teamed up again with Nemir, whose smooth and steady drumming aptly anchors the duo’s weighty, melodic and meandering songs.

Pra Sila – Vukov Totem releases September 23rd on CD with Saturnal Records and in digital format on Bandcamp. Both are currently available for pre-order.
