Album Stream: Hellish Outcast – Stay of Execution

Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like death thrash is poised to make a comeback. For most of the time that I’ve been frequenting metal blogs, the sub-genre has been treated like the ugly cosign to melodic death metal, itself the unworthy bastard of the first generation of Swedish death metal bands. It’s easy to forget that what the genre lacks in adventurousness it has made up for in song craft. the past six months have seen surprisingly good comeback albums by The Haunted as well as The Crown.

That said, if the genre’s going to star in a Cinderella story, then it’s going to need new bands, not just old ones—and not just offshoots of At The Gates, for that matter.

Enter Bergen, Norway’s Hellish Outcast. these speedsters have the chops to stand up with their peers, but a modes modern sense of moody atmosphere. Where their predecessors too often sulked, Hellish Outcast stalk. Put another way, I call them more likely to inspire a serial killer a la ACDC’s “Night Prowler” than their predecessors. Unfortunately, like many european bands the stateside release of their new album, Stay of Execution is staggered weeks behind its european drop date. The record’s been on shelves across the pond for a week. Still, for those of you with the moral fortitude to not pirate the damn thing, we’ve got Stay of Execution streaming in its entirely for you below.
