With Tacent Semitae, Adaestuo howls into being; sumptuous and grand, but conveying a greater, more sinistar darkness with their silky performance. Multi-instrumentalist VJS’s talents as part of Nightbringer and the Sargeist have hurdled him into the greater pantheon of modern black metal’s great performers. However, performing on his own, as it was with the ill-fated Incursus which preceded Adaestuo, his comportment carries the strength of an orchestra. Where his work with Nightbringer parallels the cacophonous and horrific, Tacent Semitae offers a much more sumptuous array of gothicisms which echo off high, vaulted ceilings. Adding to the mammoth, sinister beauty is the bizarre operatics of Hekte Zaren, whose magnificent, wide range of vocal talents effectively bridges the gap between Diamanda Galas’s esotericisms and Emperor’s romantic affect. Together, VJS and Hekte Zaren craft otherworldly sounds: vicious and terrifying, dreamlike and ethereal. The siren’s song drives man to dash his corporeal form upon the rocks, and Adaestuo draws their listeners into the endless pit with a single, dessicated, beckoning finger.
