A taste of Valborg's 'Barbarian'

. . .

Valborg make some of the deepest, most focused metal today. Their Crown of Sorrow was one of my favorite metal records last year. Hardly anyone knows about them, since their label Zeigeister is very unconcerned about distribution. I asked them about this (“Come on! Digital distribution? At least CDs on Amazon?”), and their response was, “People can buy at our shop”. Such belligerence is charming, I guess.

Upcoming is Barbarian, another potential Valborg masterpiece that will likely fly under radars. You can hear excerpts above. The sounds worship heavily at the altar of Tom G. Warrior, though, as before, I hear doom-inflected clean tones and bits of Godflesh. I love this sound. It’s so stark and pure.

Barbarian comes out April 30. You can order it and other Valborg merch here. Zeitgeister’s other offerings are also high quality; you can stream a label sampler here. Some of you lucky Europeans can catch Valborg on tour with Danishmendt now; see dates here.
