On a recent trip to Minneapolis, I spent some time at the glorious Extreme Noise Records and came across a free demo from Mordwolf, who play a raw form of old-school Swedish death metal (note the Entombed logo font) with incorporated scraps of d-beat hardcore and thrash. While the six tracks share a common aesthetic, Mordwolf manages to distinguish each piece with unique yet consistent songwriting that pulls no bullshit, an editing trait more death metal bands should possess. At the center of each track are great riffs and while still relatively fast, the tempo never rises beyond perfect pit speed. The vocals remind me of early Sepultura and the lead riff on “Before the Rot” sounds suspiciously like “Troops of Doom.” Note: this Mordwolf is not to be confused with the New York band of the same name.

Thanks for the review. Glad you liked it!
Mordwolf.. what the hell does that mean? “Mord” is swedish for “murder” so that might be it. It really really annoys me when bands mix different languages in names and song titles. And the correct way to write this in english is Murder Wolf, isn´t it?
I’m really curious, does anybody know what it means?
In American History, the upper midwest was inhabited by Scandinavian immigrants, mostly from Sweden and Norway. I assume you’ve seen Fargo, right?
I’ve seen Fargo. I knew about this. What’s your point?
It’s German, at least the words are, and it does mean murder wolf.
Yes, the word “mord” means the same thing in german as it does in swedish. Murder.
Mördwolf was the result of staying up too late playing with the Google Translate app and an extremely long IM session with the rest of the band. Like Brian said, we were poking fun at all the “wolf” bands and trying to smash two words together like Skeletonwitch. We’re from MN, we have Swedish ancestry and a sense of humor. That’s how a group of dumb, old death metal dudes end up with a dumb band name. Maybe it’ll grow on you, maybe not. I’m just thankful Invisible Oranges gave us a positive review and you took the time to check it out. Cheers, uff da and metal!
I betthe umpaut’s over Motley Crue and Motorhead drive you bonkers then!
Mötley Crüe, not so much. Motörhead, now that’s a pretty silly name. Still, they didn’t mix swedish and english. But translating it to swedish and saying it out loud always makes me giggle. Motorhuvve..
Sorry to “bother” you. But yes, it’s Murder Wolf. Murderwolf sounds stupid, so we changed the murder to mord as we are highly influenced by old school swededeath. It was also part a joke towards the million bands with “wolf” in their name. We just started throwing out names and we liked it.
Rock and roll and proper grammar have no relation. Sorry. We just liked the name.
Thanks for the reply Brian. It’s still a stupid name. Keep rocking!
David seems cool.
Thank you.
Awesome band, this. Hearing those sweet d-beats hammering beneath old school death metal riffs gives me goosebumps. I was kind of let down with the latest Acephalix album, this is how it should have been done.
