Aside from the weed-related implications of calling your album “Habitual Levitations (Instilling Words With Tones)”, Intronaut’s marriage of Mastodon and Pelican-influenced sounds have made them a favorite among those with an appetite for all things resting on the divide between post-rock and stoner doom. To be released on March 19th, “Habitual Levitations…” is an excellent progression of Intronaut’s well-curated sound.
I will now leave you to listen to the record’s new single “Milk Leg” for the first time. Toke up, and think about what a combination Mastodon-Pelican would actually look like.

Love that bass
This is an awesome direction from Valley of Smoke… I’m excited to hear the rest of the album!
These guys are singular, unique, and better than both of the bands you compare them to. Absolutely essential listening in a time when mediocrity reigns. Seeing them at a little place in Tempe as a headliner on Sunday night. Cant wait.
better than Meshuggah? mediocrity? I’m already wasting my time
Dude, he was talking about Mastodon and Pelican. AND, he’s right.
My friends and I will be at that show as well.
You should probably refrain from voicing your opinion cause it’s not worth anyone’s time.
Intronaut sounds nothing like Mastodon or Pelican.
A little too similar to Elegy while not being as good of a song overall. HOWEVER, I do prefer the chords around 4:30 more, but yeah WAY too similar in overall structure to Elegy in my opinion.
the dude who wrote the paragraph under the album cover is a total knob… 420 BRO MASTODON IS DA BEST LISTEN TO DIS U MIND BE BLOWN DAWG TOKE UP. fuck off
Song is cool, the production style is interesting. Very relaxing and airy. Diggin it ! Still feels like the clean yelling vocals were an afterthought though, they don’t bring much to the music. Lookin forward to the album
reminds me a bit of porcupine tree
….what?
Pelican and Mastodon are both great bands, but neither one, nor the combination of them, sounds anything like Intronaut.
deliriously orgasmic stuff
Amazing track! Can’t wait to get the new album hopefully they will release on vinyl!
I love the part that starts at around 4:20.
Hey do you write for the LEO Weekly magazine as well? I write for them sometimes and have noticed a Kelly Kettering writing for LEO as well.
JIZZ GOING EVERYWHERE
This isn’t the first time one of their songs has reminded me of the music in the prehistoric era of Chrono Trigger. That’s a high compliment.
Dear Margret, that is one sexy outro
This sounds like Intronaut, not a mix between Pelican and Mastodon at all but lots of influences they’ve.
They’ve such a great atmosphere behind as always, the song is strong. Waiting for the upcoming Album to have a better opinion.
Cheers
what no dolphins on the album cover? I refuse to even listen to this
Great album art!!!
Haha you are right it does kinda sound like Incubus with less DJ scratches. Don’t get me wrong I love Intronaut, but the new clean vocals are somewhat lacking in emotional content and the mix is so un-heavy that there’s almost no contrast…
Whoops clicked on the wrong reply button. N00b alert.
Sounds kinda like Incubus with a fuzzbox. Or that other forgettable band from the 90s that named themselves after a car. Coupe Deville? Wait…Chevelle!
David
P.S. recorded drums still sound horrible…maybe some day Intronaut…maybe some day.
David your kind of an idiot, sounds nothing like Incubus.. not sure if you are joking or not but if you are not you really need to listen to some more music so you can compare this to something besides Incubus as it sounds nothing like them at all. Drums sound awesome, as always.. I think they sound better then the last couple albums. Good job as always, bringing something fresh to the table once again.
Umm.. You know nothing.
Your jealousy is obvious.
I hope I never hear a drum mix from David.
What a stupid name.. David..
annnndd you’re dumb.
Are you fucking high? The drums sound horrible? If you don’t like a band, that’s fine, just say it. But the drums are an integral part of Intronaut.
^^^ lmao
just shut the fuck up
Fantastic. Can’t wait for more new Intronaut!
Beautiful! I did not want the song to end. Looking forward to the album!
I’m not going to say that I don’t like this. BUT…
Nothing beats Null and Void.
Mastodon – ok a little bit with the vocals, but I’m not hearing anything remotely like Pelican, these guys are way more jazz and fusion oriented. They have a very distinct sound. I’m very excited to hear this album!
You guys need not compare yourselves to anyone, you’re creating your own path…as it should be. Played the song in the background and didn’t realized how much I was enjoying it until it ended; that’s generally a good sign. Well done my friends, play in Raleigh; it would be slam packed.
they’re getting slightly better at singing, but the vox are way to up front in the mix and the guitars should have a little more heft and crunch. I still miss the tones and rawness they had on the eps with Leon.
whatever, psyched to hear the full album and see ‘em with Meshuggah.
bass run in the 5:40s is sweet.
absolutely love this song, they keep getting better!
Parts of this even reminded me a bit of Alice In Chains with the vocals. Not very much like Pelican or Mastodon. This guys are more like Tool mixed with Between the Buried and Me.
Pretty neat; I like this a lot. Thanks for posting it.
Lazy comparison is lazy. Pelican writes slow, building tunes with no vocals. Mastodon writes shit that is all over the place (in a good way).
I feel like Intronaut is really innovating with their sound and taking things to a different kind of level where metal, post rock, and fusion fans can really love what they are doing and talk about it intelligently.
The comparison to Pelican and Mastodon really doesn’t work for me on any level.
Substituting memes for criticism is lazy too.
people compare to Mastodon because the drumming is so damn good.
and they totally get clean singing right (unlike Mastodon)
Oh yes, I definitely think it sounds like Pelican. Mastodon. Pelican Pelican. Mastodooon. Mastodon, Pelican Pelican. Porcupine Tree, Pelican, Mastodon Tree Pelican. Or they sound like themselves. Just sayin’.
Diggin that bass! Also, I’m SO down with these clean vocals. Can’t wait for the new album XD
Intronaut is 342587436289475 better than Mastodon and Pelican put together.
Bloody hell, who let the reactards out? Do these come with BV?
Anyay, nice song tho. A little too clean and polished for my tastes. I don’t get the Mastodon reference, apart from maybe 1 single piece of Mastodon proggery in the last Crack the Skye song. Yeah, both drummers are good, but they sound nothing alike. Mastodon is way looser than this, not to mention Pelican. I don’t hear any Pelican at all here. Why them? The positive feel of the thing? I get the guy mentioning Meshuggah though (tightness and djentishness) and Tool (drums).
RIP IO
Not even 1% this sounds like awful mastodon…… and the other band ….
need to go check ur hearing to the doctor!
No one gives a shit if you think this band does or doesn’t sound like other bands. How could any of your opinions on that possibly matter?
