Skull-bashing cro-magnon DNA lurks within grindcore, so it is always impressive to see a band that take that propulsive hatred and put an intelligent spin on it. Defeatist was that rare breed, unafraid to blast with the best of them but never staying predictable. Their last show went down in late 2011 at the DIY mecca Death By Audio in their hometown of NYC, and they will be missed (pictures from that show).
If you never caught the Defeatist train or you’d like to relive some of those riffs, the grind trio have posted their discography for the easily accomplished price of whatever-the-hell-you-want. Members of Defeatist, who also previously served in Anodyne, Kalibas and other bands, have gone on to form the jazzy hardcore/grind hybrid Radiation Blackbody. Check them out if the occasion arises.

I remember reading an Up Front feature about these guys in Decibel years ago and then tearing apart the Web to find their debut only to come back empty handed. Finally found their stuff on a blog a year or so later. Stoked to finally pay them their blast beat royalties.
I’ll gladly join the echo chamber…these guys and Dephosphorus (sp?) were/are criminally underrated…Defeatist did their their grind gnarly w/ a nice touch of EHG influence…Radiation Blackbody’s EP is well worth tracking down on the interwebz as well…for some reason I think one of the Defeatist dudes is/was in Castevet, but not 100% sure.
Correct—Defeatist bassist Joshua Scott, also of Anodyne and Radiation Blackbody, was in Castevet for years.

Liked this band a lot, especially the last record. I’m hoping to see more coverage of grindcore on IO now, especially the amazing new Cloud Rat record that comes out in a few weeks.
