Black September may fly below the radar, but with the release of Into The Darkness Into The Void on September 25th, that’s likely to change. Citing an interesting collection of influences including Bolt Thrower, Dissection, and Bathory, Black September make death metal for fans of blackened doom.
These nine new tracks are filled to the brim with crusty death and filthy sludge, which is no surprise considering their previous split collaboration with Louisiana’s Thou.

I’m hearing a fairly substantial amount of Psalm 69-era Ministry in the vocals.
I hear a lot of things. Some of the vocals and some of the instrumentation is almost Portal/Impetuous Ritual sounding. Many of the riffs even sound somewhat like Convulse or some of the earlier finnish death metal bands. Overall the production is a lot airier though, and more modern sounding. Those vocals are pretty distinct, I can’t really pin them down.
I agree with the influences cited above as well as the commentator citing the Ministry type vocals-although interesting I’m afraid they might get drowned out in the live setting. I also notice a Slayer type “thrashy” riff segments that got thrown in a couple of times. Some of the drum patterns remind me of something I can’t recall now…something more “techy” than you would expect almost fear factory style but not quite there…perhaps Ray Herrera on the second Brujeria album?
I hear some Behemoth in the tremelo riffing: black metal drama and death metal muscle.
And the doomy lick that comes in at around 2:35 kind of reminds me of the hook from this obscure little ditty called “Raining Blood.”
Anyway, I like this.
If Bolt Thrower’s main influence was only Bathory’s Under the Sign of The Black Mark, Entombed’s Left Hand Path, and they solely played house shows with crust bands.

BLACK SEPTEMBER – mp3
Chicago’s deathblackcrust metallers Black September harkens back to the crust/death metal of old Bolt Thrower and the epic qualities of Bathory.
ABYSME
In the somewhat quiet recesses of Pittsburgh, ABYSME began to coagulate and stir in the year 2006. Formed by guitarist/vocalist Brad Heiple, who began playing death metal as a teenager in 1990 as a founding member and songwriter in FUNERUS, and drummer Timothy R. Williams, who had roots in the punk and hardcore scene, playing with DAVENPORT, AUS-ROTTEN and HUMAN INVESTMENT, among others. Mike Bolam, bass player of crossover and powerviolence stalwarts CRUCIAL UNIT and WARZONE WOMYN (etc.), was brought into the fold shortly after to play bass. Passages of heavy death metal with varying tempos slowly began to solidify and take form. And with the help of legendary artist Chris Moyen called upon to create the logo, ABYSME was born unto the world. Since that time, the band self-released a demo (on CD-R, pro tape by Unholy Domain Records), and has shared the stage with many bands. Now, ABYSME are honored to join the roster of Blood Harvest Records and Hellthrasher Productions for their debut release, STRANGE RITES, with Putrid Matt handling the grotesquely appropriate and brilliant artwork.
COFFINWORM
Coffinworm was formed under watchful eye of Choronzon in late 2007. The ‘Great Bringer of Night’ demo was recorded by Bob Fouts (Basement Rage Studios) in late 2008/early 2009 and led to an alliance with Profound Lore Records shortly afterwards. The ‘When All Became None’ full-length was recorded by Sanford Parker in December of 2009 within Semaphore Studios, Chicago, and released in April 2010. Summer 2010 saw a lineup change with J. joining the fold on drums and C. moving from behind the kit to guitar. The band is currently working on material that will comprise the second full-length release on Profound Lore Records.
TERMINATE
Terminate was formed in 2010 by John Porada(Deadnight). influenced by the Swedish death metal scene of the late 80s and early 90s, as well as bands like Bolt Thrower and Asphyx, Terminate seeks to continue the tradition of heavy rhythms, melodic guitar riffs, and sickening vocals under the chainsaw guitar sound of their predecessors.
I definitely hear Dissection (it’s the main songwriter’s favorite band), but this is less black and snowy; I think healthy doses of Bolt Thrower and “Pleasure to Kill”-era Kreator round off the Scandinavian edges.
The guitarist is also in a bad ass sludge band called Dirthog. I definitely do not hear that in this band.
Sounds like a pile of Bullshit.
Sounds like a pile of Bullshit.
One of the best US bands heard in ages!
Behemoth (later), Metallica (early), some others I can’t put my finger on.

Back to the album, it reminds me of a punkier Angelcorpse meets Unanimated.
I definitely hear a lot of influences from Moral Void.
