Chicago’s Nachtmystium have moved away from their black metal beginnings, but no matter where Blake Judd finds his muse, there is always a blackness at the heart of his music. This special 7″ release reflects that darkness with a 100% black vinyl, exclusively limited to North America with only 500 copies to be produced.
The As Made 7″ will feature a cover of the Joy Division song “The Eternal”, which features vocals by Chris Connelly (Revolting Cocks, Ministry), and while you can’t get yourself a copy (for only $6!) till May 15th, you can hear a stream of the previously unreleased original Nachtmystium title track right here, right now.

hmm, it’s startling to hear such blatant Ministry imitation, but also cool to hear that influence getting tapped. Nachtmystium’s growing on me, Addicts is pretty awesome. Hail drum machine.
This is uncomfortably close to “The Missing” by Ministry:

You’re not wrong there. Sounds very much like The Missing.
Not sure if that’s a good thing or not. Maybe people ripping off Ministry will be next step from people ripping off Entombed.
I heard someone else say a while back that maybe Godflesh would be the next band to rip off. Maybe the new sound will be early ’90s industrial?
The new Secrets of the Moon has a killer Ministry riff on the track Serpent Messiah, though it’s less obvious.
I wouldn’t mind hearing more Ministry in my metal.
Oh really, whereabouts?
I have toa dmit my knowledge of Ministry is minimal at best. My knowledge of Secrets Of The Moon however is breathtakingly acceptable.
Andy: around 1:24. Not what I was expecting out of Seven Bells, but it’s awesome nonetheless. (And that record is great!)

“Maybe the new sound will be early ’90s industrial?”
since the 90s are coming back hard, that’s my best guess.
I wouldn’t mind that one bit. Early Godflesh doesn’t do anything for me, to be honest (that drum machine) but I’m a bit of a sucker for industrial metal as a rule.
BURNING INSIIIIIIIIIIIIIDEEEEEEEE.
truthfully, the bands aping classic ministry are doing it better than whatever ministry’s doing these days.
The Eternal is one of the most depressing songs on a really depressing album. What was that bit of Ian Curtis lore: when they discovered him hanging (or hung) Iggy Pop’s The Idiot was still playing on the turntable, I think.
Joy Division always had great bass lines.
I’d prefer a Godflesh influence instead of Ministry.
The Ministry influence isn’t surprising since Judd lists Filth Pig as one of his favorite discs. Coincidentally – or not – Chris Connelly also did some work with Ministry back in the day.
R.I.P. Nachtmystium, 2000-2009. Nice knowing ya.
@CR — I think Blake likes to put things out there to defy expectations and stir shit up. Since Black Meddle there’s been at least one track where he completely wears his influences on his sleeve and it seems to always be the track that’s released first.
I’ve never been let down by this band…then again, I’d say “Instinct Decay,” is one of my favorite metal albums of the new century.
I see what you’re saying, but I just cannot get behind anything on Addicts. This new song isn’t my bag, either. I’ll still give whatever he comes up with a try, but my expectations have dropped off significantly.
I’m a pretty big Nachtmystium fan in general, I really didn’t like Addicts at all, and I LOVE this track.
Kind of reminds me of a blackened Today is the Day
I’m a big Ministry fan — got on board in about 1990 and still listen to them today — but I don’t need Nachtmystium (which is another band I’ve long enjoyed) to sound like Ministry. I hope this is something of a one-off, not the direction the entire new Nachtmysium album will take.
As weird as it is to hear them go this route, there is something cool about a Chicago “black metal” band (quotes to acknowledge they’ve since departed the genre) reaching back to the Wax Trax scene and working with Chris Connelly. It’s weird, but there’s an interesting lineage and parallels to be drawn between the two scenes.
I wouldn’t worry. Don’t forget this track was nothing like Ministry “I Wait in Hell”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=JR4JwflXpiQ
The part not played in the second half of the song is more of a blues jam. Not sure if the full track is streaming anywhere but got the split.
this is such a great homage to ministry, NIN broken era. if there’s someone to bring this sound anew, its these guys. fucking awesome!!!!
and i add BM has become just as diverse as industrial and i love it. ministry, NIN, nitzer ebb, die warzaw, front 242, skinny puppy, etc., all sounded totally different! there’s nothing wrong with wearing your influences on your sleeve and this track nails it!
Should I also mention that ‘Silencing Machine’ is a line from the NIN song Mr Self Destruct.
Holy shit! Someone finally figured this out! You’re dead-on with the lyric reference / title here. Good call!
This track is great. Can’t wait for their Creed “homage”!
We could never recreate the Creed homage that was mastered in the youtube video classic “Creed shreds”. If you haven’t watched this, check it out. It’s fucking priceless.
that is pretty great.
Could have SWORN I read that Blake said this record was going to be more of a straight BM record…either he was lying or this is the only track that sounds like this on the record???
Yes. He said that in the latest Decibel Studio Report (Paradise Lost cover).
He said that about “Addicts” as well, and when I bought it I was met with something that wasn’t even remotely black metal. Well, ok, High on Hate and Every Last Drop are good songs but everything in between was terrible, in my opinion. Just not my cup of tea. Calling this new song “black metal” is sort of like calling the new Anathema “funeral doom”. Unless there is a drastic change in sound on the new album, I won’t be buying it as this band has simply moved into a musical territory that doesn’t interest me. I loved Assassins, but it appears that might be the last album from this band that I enjoy.
Just gonna leave this out there: BLOODIEST.
Pretty awesome! Like it better than most of Ministry’s output, actually. After ‘Mind’ it was kind of diminished returns. Loved Addicts, curious to here the ‘classic’ Instinct style return.
