Dark Castle’s Surrender to All Life Beyond Form (Profound Lore, 2011) is the sound of freedom. Guitarist/vocalist Stevie Floyd has fully absorbed sludge, doom, black, and death metal, and funneled those vocabularies into organic expression. She sounds like she is always learning. Exotic scales and acoustic instruments (guitar, piano) have crept into her playing. Floyd is not exactly John McLaughlin with Shakti, but I bet she’d crib a trick or two from him.
On record, Dark Castle was once potential. Now the band is force, moving and writhing with a desire so vibrant that it practically grips listeners and shakes them. “Live!” the force says. “Learn and do!” So Floyd paints (see above artwork) and tattoos and screams her heart out. She and drummer Rob Shaffer smash hard at metal’s walls. In their hands, metal is not preconceptions. It is breaking the shackles that keep humans from thriving.
Surrender arrives on May 31. Hear another song from it here. Pre-order the album here. Dark Castle will tour the US and Europe with YOB this year, with Shaffer on drums for both bands.

Powerful
I will definitely be getting this.
YOB and Dark Castle??? Are you fucking kidding me? That will be the best show I see this year.
most anticipated album for this month, hopefully the tour will pass by somewhere close, although i kinda of doubt it.
YOB and Dark Castle were some of the best bands that I saw at South by Southwest this year! Getting to see YOB twice in the same day, along with getting to see Saint Vitus, Pentagram, and Eyehategod that same week was the icing on my first time at South by Southwest. This is the next best thing to going to Roadburn!
The cover artwork sucks. Great band though. And yes, Yob is awesome.
Very cool artwork…
really digging the hell out of this…
just thought i’d share this, if any one is a fan of tombs.

a good read as well
I hope I get to see this band and YOB together this summer. Certainly sounds like a great double bill. Love the snare sound on this song, can’t wait to hear the album in its entirety!
This song is AMAZING, wow Dark Castle have really grown. I really like the artwork too!
pretty awesome, although i honestly prefer the first album’s vocal approach. the drum sound on this track is fucking powerful. i’ll definitely be checking this album out (and hopefully seeing them with yob).
