Utech Records is hosting its first ever Music Festival a month from today, June 11, in Milwaukee, WI. You can see details and download a free sampler of the fest’s artists here. The lineup includes heavyweights in the world of drone; we’ve written about some of them here (see links below). Keith Utech is a great graphic designer and has impeccable taste in curating his label. I would go to this in a heartbeat if I lived nearby.
Look out for an upcoming Horseback/Locrian split on Utech. What a pairing! I’m glad this music can have life, not only on wax, but also on stage. If any readers are going, I’d love to get a show report.

Killer flyer! I’d probably fall asleep at the show, but a flyer like that makes it look so cool… Did he draw that?
Here’s another side to the whole free music dilemma. Sometimes, when you get free music, it’s a sampler. I always find myself deleting these things after one listen, and don’t come away with a much better idea of what the band’s album is going to be like.
I’ll probably download it anwyay and be disappointed.
I might actually go to this. Milwaukee is only 2 hours away from Chicago. I’ve seen Locrian about 6-7 times in the last 3 years and they have evolved into a force to be reckoned with live.
Milwaukee and Chicago have some sort of mutual relationship going on when it comes to noise/drone. Bands that play the DIY space Borg Ward in Milwaukee also tend to play small noise oriented DIY venues in Chicago such as The Bakery, Enemy, and the Mopery (RIP).
Does anybody remember Matchitehew Assembly, held in 2009 in Chicago? It was a very mind blowing noise/drone/black metal fest that happened in a DIY art space in the south side of Chicago. Locrian played one of those days, and they shared the stage with black metal bands Marblebog from Hungary, Krieg, Bone Awl, Ashdautas, Volahn, and Velnias, as well as some notable noise artists such as Bloodyminded, Sword Heaven, Air Conditioning, Rusted Shut, and John Wiese. I have some photos of the bands I was able to shoot at the fest.

A good resource to check out is the Bloodlust! label run by Mark Solotroff, it’s very useful most especially for those who want to get deeper and darker in the noise/drone realm.

I should clarify that I did not do the flyer. It was illustrated by Viral Graphics.
Thanks for the clarification, Keith. I must add that Viral Graphics has done some great work for bands many of us know. See here:

Great flyer, and a very cool looking festival. The only thing that would make it cooler would be a Skullflower /Matthew Bower performance.
Radio station KFJC will be broadcasting this event live on the web.

utech fan – Thanks for the tip. A live Internet feed is a very cool idea.
