Invisible Oranges has published the official program guide for Maryland Deathfest 2011.
You can preview and buy it here.
It’s actually more like a magazine, with interviews and features on 19 bands playing at the fest:
Aura Noir
Buzzov*en
Cathedral
Coroner
Corrosion of Conformity
Doom
Exhorder
Exhumed
Extortion
Hail of Bullets
Impaled Nazarene
Lock Up
Marduk
Neurosis
Nightbringer
Nuclear Assault
Skinless
Tragedy
Voivod
Yes, this is our first ever print project. Yes, it damn near killed us. Hundreds of hours and emails went into this beast. Making a proper magazine is no joke. If you strip away the advertising from nationally distributed metal magazines, this program guide is actually comparable in terms of pages of content. But we have day jobs, there are only several of us, and our budget was a fraction of that of our favorite metal magazines.
And yet we kicked ass, if I do say so myself. Jess did the best Voivod interview I’ve ever read. Our reader Asa E stepped up and did an incredibly detailed interview with Coroner. French did the killer cover illustration, and Jaci Raia provided an amazing layout.
You can preview the whole thing and buy it here.
- Physical purchases ($12.50) include a free digital download, readable on computers, iPads, and devices with PDF readers.
- If you just want the digital download, you can get it for $1.
Please spread the word! This is not meant just for MDF attendees. I want people everywhere to read about these bands and see some great visuals.

Impressive! Very progressive of you to use a print on demand service AND offer the booklet for a dollar online. Will buy right now!
Too bad that Death Breath had to cancel they gig in MDF! But the cast of the festival stills awesome!!!
1 buck? sold. its almost a pleasure to spend a single dollar and get something.
that being said….Ghost is like, totally, my new fave band. Discuss. I’ll be back once I’m caffeinated.
Very nice work. Too bad I can’t afford the price at this point…
You’re a dirty, stinking capitalist Cosmo. Oh wait, I’m in ad sales.
Absolutely love it. I will be picking this up. I’m looking forward to future leg-numbing (metal) experiences that, for a change, will not involve Decibel.
Nice.
word, i like pictures and shit, will buy. are all you IO peeps goin to deathfest?
Nice, I’ll be attending my first Deathfest this year and will definitely check this out.
Looks like the snafu with the venue closing has been smoothed over as well.
congrats on the foray into self-publishing cosmo! i just bought my copy.
Holy shit! You weren’t kidding…
Kudos: this is beautiful.
If our Twitter savvy readers could send a Tweet and a link it would be much appreciated. Spread the word! If you like the blog you will definitely dig the magazine.
Congratulations! I bet that this is going to be awesome. I couldn’t resist buying the paper copy; this is going to be great item to remember MDF 2011 by. This may be my last MDF, at least for many years, as I am moving out of the area in just a few months, so this will make for a great memento.
I will buy one next week (paper copy)!
@Justin tweeted…twitted, twatted? DONE. That’s the main point here.
Will Hubbell – You’re our first ever print customer! That’s one for the history books.
Allan Daniel – Yes, it’s a shame, but I think Skinless will be a more than adequate replacement. The rest of the lineup is amazing!
Crack – I’m very curious as to see if Ghost can sustain their energy for a second record.
patnesheksballs – We’re making just a few cents per sale, so “capitalist” remains an aspiration, not an insult at this point!
ol’ jimmy wilson – I believe two of us will be going, Jess and Kim. Unfortunately, the rest of us couldn’t get the time off from work.
lou – Thanks for the support!
DieByTheChord – You will have a great time. Just dress for hot weather and pace yourself with the beer.
Thats a bummer, I wish everyone could go to this. Looking forward to rolling a bunch of cones on the front of this magazine for the deathfest weekend enjoyment. If any of you guys burn, try to find me, I’ll be the toasted dude with a beard and a bathory cut-off. Shouldnt be THAT hard to find…..
Yeah, definitely pace yourself with the beer. Ol’ Jimmy Wilson up there can tell you all about drinking too much beer at MDF.
Damn that looks sweet. Thats a LOT of hair and tattoos…Way to go team!
It was a honor to both work for Cosmo and talk to the Marquis Marky. So stoked to have been able to contribute to a real-deal print publication. See you at MDF, y’all…you can guess where I’ll be for Coroner’s set.
Wow, this looks awesome. Bought the print copy and will have a gander at the digital one in the meantime. I’m not going to MDF, but anything I can do to support good print media, especially in the extreme music realm, I will do. The product looks like it will live up to the very high standards here at IO, so the price tag is reasonable IMO. Can’t wait to get the real deal in the mail.
Bought the PDF and read it on my lunch break, loved it! Thanks Cosmo et. all… the Neurosis & Coroner interviews were both really in-depth and interesting.

Id buy that for a dollar!
I was on the fence between physical vs digital copy, but MacMurdo’s Robocop quote warmed my heart and tipped the balance toward expenditure. Looking forward to this thing! Wish I was going to the fest too, dammit.
Excellent! Will this be available at Deathfest?
Ben P – Unfortunately, due to its print-on-demand nature, this won’t be available at MDF (unless you bring your own!). The upside is that you can order and get it any time before and after the fest.

PRINT WILL NEVER DIE!!!
Cosmo, you’ve announced/written about “going away” or “retiring from metal” at least 5 times now. Great.
Go away, douchebag. Don’t say these things just to elicit “oh no, don’t go away” responses to your attention-whoring. Jesus. Have some self respect.
I’ll see you at MDF.
Coroner, Voivod and Aura Noir on the same line-up. I hope I could make it there…dammit!
Stinkin’ capitalist! Just kidding, got my digital copy. Looking forward to reading it tomorrow.
This looks good enough to buy, I’m pissed I didn’t push myself harder to go to the fest this year as each one is an amazing way to see a shitload of amazing bands all at once, despite having the money to ravage the distro n merch booths. Guess I’ll sit around and read this while jacking off… there is still Rites of Darkness…
Main point: this is awesome and commendable, congrats!
Side point: this is why the world needs a good micropayment system. I am (nearly) too lazy to spend the $1 to get this because you need to create an account. I expect Google to make real headway here…satan forbid that Facebook becomes a dominant force in that.
post-felix – I agree that the system could be better, so thanks for the feedback. For sure we’ll be tweaking things with future projects to make things easier and better for everyone. Thanks for the support!
Just got this in the mail today. What a fantastic job!
I know it wasn’t easy to put together, but it turned out amazing. I really think there’s a market for similar physical offerings. Plz make moar.
