Maruta sound exactly like how I want technical death metal to sound – big but raw. They are usually called grindcore, but their 2008 debut In Narcosis had technical moments. Guitarist Eduardo Borja was clearly capable of more. Now with Maruta’s addition of a bassist, Borja has let loose some serious riffage. Some parts are technical, some are doomy, and some just flat-out grind. The way Borja digs into his strings yields caustic hooks everywhere. “Death/grind” usually means “grindcore songs that last too long”, but this is death/grind par excellence.
Forward into Regression comes out a month from today, March 8, on Willowtip. Power It Up will release a gatefold LP version. You can hear two more songs from the CD and pre-order it here.

Looking forward to this so much, will Maruta be able to challenge Gridlinks seat on the technical throne?
Oh yes, more like that please.
I hope these guys didn’t go too far away from grind and towards death metal with this one. I loved the last release because it was so raw, and managed to pack so much punch with just the one guitar.
I’m not usually one for fits of unbridled enthusiasm, but…HELL…YES!!! Mucho excited.
They Definitely have not ventured too far from grind at all with the new shit. I saw them a few months ago with wormrot and Phobia, and it was as grind as ever, just with tech DM parts thrown in here n there. One of the songs on Willowtip is more on the grind side of things (hand of the overseer) http://www.willowtip.com/releases/details/maruta-forward-into-regression.aspx
diggin this, definitely have to check some more out.
is it just me or does that picture look like that dudes goatee was drawn on?
Hell yeah, Gorguts-ass riffs.
It’s hard to tell from the angle, but it looks like he may have more than six strings on that guitar.
I was really impressed with their two tracks on This Comp…
I can’t get the player to work in neither Firefox nor Safari.
Nice… I dug the last album. It’s cool that they added a bass, but, at least on this song, they basically And Justice For All’d him, so it really doesn’t sound much different than the previous album which had no bass. Missed opportunity to be heavier.
Shit yeah! So excited for this album to drop. Their first LP was my favorite grind(ish?) release of the year for sure
dude puts the squealie to good use!
i like this in that it sounds like a lot of bands I can’t stand, but they succeed by nailing the style and writing a real song. i’ll buy this for sure.
hell yeugh!
Miskatonic – Good eyes! In this photo, he’s evidently playing a 7-string guitar:

Also, I just tested the player in Firefox and IE, and it works. Try refreshing your browsers?
ol’ jimmy wilson – I thought the same thing.
I tried all of that. It’s a few hours later now and it works.
Killer song! It’s not brimming with bass but it’s not like there’s no low end. That extra string really gives it a fleshy punch. That’s kinda ballsy to use a seven stringer in this anti-nu climate. I dig it!
Fucking awesome band, and I can’t wait for this album to drop.
The thing that annoys me is that someone over at metal archives decided that Maruta falls on the wrong side of the “grindcore” divide and they don’t have a page there. How stupid.
These guys are the future of grindcore. Also, they played the show I met my wife at! The full bill was Impaled/Maruta/Kill The Client/Illogicist.
I also forgot to add that Mitchell (vox) was extremely gracious when I awkwardly/sheepishly approached him about doing an interview for my old website (Sonic Frontiers, RIP) after their set. Nice guys and great musicians who deserve your undivided attention.
Was thinking along the same lines as Will here.
Seems more like tech death than grind.
