Darkest Era in the studio
. . .
There’s something so nice about gentle, goofy Northern Irish lasses and lads making heavy fucking metal. I can’t understand them half the time, but that only adds to their charm. See the above studio diary video by Darkest Era – aren’t they adorable? Sarah Weighell has a hat with ears. Lisa Howe is no slouch on the drums. Dwayne “Krum” Maguire can really sing (a formidable selection of folk songs). And, man, Wales! That’s where Darkest Era recorded The Last Caress of Light, out February 15 on Metal Blade. It’s so green.
The above video shows the drums and vocals tracking for “An Ancient Fire Burns”, one of my favorite songs on Last Caress. (It also has Copperplate Gothic font, one of my favorite fonts.) You can hear this mighty song below. This is not sit-down metal. You do not zone out to it. You do not put it in the background. You go to battle to it. Saddle up!

This song kinda reminds me of Omen! I like it.
Strange that the band showed everything being recorded except the bass. Was the bass recorded by one of the guitar players, or was it a session musician?
The band has a bassist, so I can only assume that the bass recording was not exciting enough to make it into a highlight reel!
“so nice about gentle, goofy Northern Irish lasses and lads”: yeah, until they drink you under the table!!! I can’t even compete with the women. I swear all irish must be genetically born with a hollow leg and a high tolerance for alchohol.
what is it you like about Copperplate? i wish it would die a horrible death. just sayin.
I couldn’t help but notice the pic: the singer is holding an invisible orange…
Got this today – Cosmo, you were dead on, it rules!!!
I used to play with a guy from Belfast, and you could understand him until he started drinking, then his speech faltered into totally unintelligible Irish…
alex – I like Copperplate Gothic because it seems a little cheeky to me. It tries to be pompous and understated at the same time.
Solomon Grundy – Glad you like it! Let’s hope others wise up to this band!
