Behold the Dark Castle cupcake. Ain’t it sweet? It’s literally sweet: a chococolate cupcake filled with dulce de leche. (“Dulce” is Spanish for “sweet”.)
In its recipe, Kathy Bejma of Metalcakes explains how to make dulce de leche from scratch, and links to a blog post explaining how to fill cupcakes with stuff. That post’s comments are amazing: lots and lots of ladies (and a man or two) dishing on different techniques for filling cupcakes. There are many cats and many ways to skin them.
This Saturday, Dark Castle are playing Scion Rock Fest (set times). I’m very excited to see them, and to hear their new, Sanford Parker-produced album forthcoming on Profound Lore. Below is “Awake in Sleep”, the song that inspired this cupcake. (Dig the 7/8 riff at 5:02!) The video and audio quality is, well, sweet.

Dark Castle – “Awake in Sleep (live)”
. . .

Metalcakes is awesome. I love metal themed food. First is Kuma’s corner, then the metal cookbook I got for Xmas from my bro, and now metal cupcakes. Of this I wholeheartedly approve.
And they’re playing at Union Pool in the video? Bad ass.
Thanks for the compliments!
My favorite comment on filling cupcakes is the one about “squeezing until it bulges.” Awesome.
Dark Castle, isn’t it what Dimmu Borgir means in english? Who the hell thinks a cupcake is metal?
Dark Castle is excellent! I saw them play about the first 2 minutes of “Awake in Sleep” at some basement in College Park, MD, before Stevie started getting electrocuted! The basement being partially flooded was probably the culprit. I heard they were breaking up; glad to see them continuing to destroy!
I don’t think the audio in the video is live, though.
I’ve been using Metalcakes for a while now, there are a lot of really great cupcake recipes and filling recipes. The Buried at Sea cupcakes have an amazing recipe for chocolate ganache and creme patisserie
These guys sounds awesome and that riff you mention is great. Must investigate further.
@ Eric Syre
As far as I recall, Dimmu Borgir’s name was derived from a volcanic formation or something akin to that. I may be wrong, if so, sorry for my error.
I want that cupcake… it looks delicious.
I know them they’re nice people, but I am pretty sick of that style and the people who go to those shows
@Eric Syre
Metal is awesome. Cupcakes are awesome. Therefore, Cupcakes are Metal.
@RAREF
Cool. More room at the front for me.
Great band, Stevie and Rob are great people. Breaking up? Hell naw, though Rob is in 999999999 bands now (including Soilent Green!)
This is so amazing!! I want one!!
Stevie – Next time you guys play Chicago, maybe Kathy can make some for you! You guys killed it at Scion Rock Fest!
Absolutely!
The next time you play Chicago, I’ll totally bake you batch -count on it!
