Like our counterparts at MetalSucks, who premiered “Hang in Agony Until You’re Dead”, we’re still in disbelief that this is happening. My mother did not raise me to debut Deicide songs to the world. Also, the very fact that Deicide are still around is cause for concern/celebration/mirth, depending on your proclivities. I don’t even know who’s in the band right now. There’s Glen Benton and Steve Asheim, of course, and Jack Owen is one guitarist. Either Kevin Quirion or Ralph Santolla is the other guitarist. I suppose seeing the album’s liner notes would help, or attending Deicide’s upcoming tour (dates below).
Pre-orders for the CD and its related t-shirt are here. To Hell With God comes out February 15 on Century Media.

This record is really strong. It’s not “The Stench of Redemption” (which I think is the best Deicide album – getting loose of the original guitarists and bringing in Owen and Santolla was Benton’s best move ever), but it’s really, really good.
I lost interest in these guys years ago. All the faux Satanic stuff gets old fast. “To Hell With God” is the best they could come up with along with the “God is Dead” tour title?
I can’t believe you put ‘Til Death Do Us Part’ as a strikeout, its as strong a contender for best Deicide album as its predecessor!
Serpents of the Light a walk? C’mon man, that’s a triple, so many good songs on that one. And Insineratehymn should get a walk for “Bible Basher” alone.
This song isn’t awful. If anything, it’s pretty cool. I’m super tired of their twelve-year-old who hates his mommy satanist schtick, however. “To Hell With God”? Really?
“I feel like Suicide Girls need someone in the room to say “No, cut that out. What are you stupid? Hey! Don’t get that Sailor Jerry tatto. No, snakebite piercings are wicked stupid. Please stop talking about your…” As you can see, this quote was originally not about Deicide. If however, one were to replace “Sailor Jerry tattoo” with “Inverted crucifix burned into your forehead” it suddenly becomes almost completely relevant.
Re: Watt Par: Your comment is fucking hilarious and spot-on!
While Deicide are a corner stone in Death Metal, and arguably so, they have become like soggy cocoa-puffs in a bowl of sour milk but without the sugar. The tracks sound solid, but to be blunt, I’m not banking on these guys much as they sound too much like cookie-cutter copies of themselves. If anything, I’m really curious to hear the new Amon! Now that’s going to be interesting…
Huh. Looks like Deicide has a really high SLG%.
To go with another baseball metaphor, Deicide throw fastball after fastball—no curveballs or off-speed stuff. Lyrically, too, they’re right over the middle of the plate, still coming with the same blasphemy that they did at the beginning of their careers. There’s definitely a place for that on metal’s 40-man roster, but I’d rather swing and miss trying to guess what Morbid Angel is going to throw at us next.
gotta say, your scorecard looks just about spot-on to me. lots to agree with in the comments already too – particularly from ‘pseudo’ just above me. yeah, the album & tour names are pretty lame, but i dig the cover artwork at least… not sure whether i’ll eventually cough up the $ for a copy of this or not, but this song at least shows some potential. gotta check out that other preview / premiere / whatever track you mentioned as well…
Yawn.
I think those who were there for the first album can’t help but be bored by this point. But hey, if Glenn can keep it up, more power to him. Are there kids out there excited for a new Deicide record?
the album cover. that’s some shit right there.
Yeah, I actually thought the song was pretty cool, if a tad middle of the road. Metalsucks had another song (I think they debuted it, but maaaaaaaybe not) and I remember liking that one a little more.
I really like this. This is going to be a killer album
I own the Best Of Deicide album, and think every single song on it is awesome, but I don’t agree with loads of people who say Deicide is crap now, because I really like The Stench Of Redemption, and Till Death Do Us Part. It might be different, but different isn’t necessarily bad.
Cosmo, I’d love to see you interview Glen Benton. Say what you will about Deicide, but Benton’s interviews are always pretty entertaining.
I’ve had this in my inbox but haven’t listened to it yet and can’t listen now due to being at work. The band is pretty hit and miss, but if they can re-capture the magic of The Stench Redemption, then I might dig it. I’m also morbidly curious to hear that new Amon album.
Josh Haun – Glen Benton would indeed be an interesting interview. Maybe it can happen!
It’s a sad day when a Florida band can’t even be bothered playing a show in Florida.
That’s definitely a Ralph Santolla solo, no doubt about it.
I think the new record has some potential. The 2 tracks I’ve heard, thusfar, are monumentally better than most “death metal” of this age…
Can someone explain to this poor Brit what the hell those scores mean?!? I like all of Deicide“s albums apart form the last one (which was a complete snoozefest) and the terrible dop of Insineratehymn and In Torment In Hell which were just dull.
I have great love for their first album and “Legion” but I think Deicide has been much better since Owen and Santolla joined. I’m going to go on a limb and say that “The Stench Of Redemption” is their best record ever…amazingly fluid guitars; classic Deicide sound with much better playing and even melody. The only thing that sucks on that record is the tired lyrics.
I’m also with the other folks who like “Til Death” … that’s in no way a strikeout. It’s not as good as “Stench” but much better than the latter Hoffman-era albums.
Mac – I’ve noticed in general that touring bands seem to skip playing Florida often. I wonder why.
Ian – HR = Home run, 3B = triple, 2B = double, 1B = single, BB = base on balls (aka “walk”), K = strikeout. For more info, see the link below the graphic
I think serpents of the light should be 2B.
This new deicide song is pretty solid same with Hang in agony until you’re dead. I think the album is going to be pretty solid
No comment on Deicide.
I like your scorecard system (even though I don’t give a shit about sports). It’s a quick and effective way to sum up the high’s and lows of a band’s highs and lows.
It would be cool to see you do Electric Wizard, Entombed, Slayer, Xasthur, etc.
Here’s a few more you could use:
Reached on error: Bad album with great cover art
Intentional BB: Obtuse, but they get the benefit of the doubt
Warning track fly ball: Great music, unlistenable production
Fouling off a bunt in the ninth inning with two strikes, two outs, and the winning run on first base: Cold Lake
Legion = Grand Slam
Fouling off a bunt in the ninth inning with two strikes, two outs, and the winning run on first base: Cold Lake
Nah, “Cold Lake” is Bill Buckner letting the ball roll between his feet.
i agree with Justin, Stench of Redemption is so much more interesting and forceful than the rest of their albums. the self-titled is really strong, but after that it was a case of diminishing returns. these new tracks don’t seem particularly awesome, but i’m not the biggest fan to begin with, so what do i know.
I have some respect for Deicide, just for continuously putting out the most idiotic song titles for 20+ years. Even though this song seems recycled, it’s decent, at least they’re still making death metal unlike Cryptopsy
Sounds pretty damn good, I just may buy this one!
And the score card is pretty spot on except that I think “Once Upon The Cross” is a HR and “Serpents Of The Light” is at least a 2B.
I too disagree with the “Serpents of the Light” score. Not to make a comparison here, but I’ve always bundled Deicide up with Cannibal Corpse as far as record-to-record innovation goes.
Haven’t listened to them in a few years, but I’m curious how this will turn out.
After 3 K Deicide is OUT!
Cover artwork 666×666 pixels.
Sounds really good, can’t wait for the album!
Legion should be a HR
Serpents a walk? lol wtf…while the sound is a little brassy it has some of the best lyrics and overall solid it should be a 3b
I also think Once upon the cross should be a 3B or HR the album is an absolute classic. I hope the “Brothers” come back…Deicide early sound wasn’t just metal but had a pure dark evil sound to it. They had some dark magic going…
New songs sounds killer. Greetings from Sweden. Welcome to Gothenburg Deicide!
Let me rescore these albums for you since whoever did it performed poorly:
Deicide: HR
Legion: 2nd Base
Once Upon The Cross:HR
Serpents of the Light:3rd Base
Insineratehymn:1st base
In Torment In Hell: K
Scars of the Crucifix: 2nd Base
Stench of Redemption:Grand fucking Slam HR
Till Death Do Us Part: BB
To Hell With God: good luck
To Erick.
Legion a 2b??? I would reccomend smoking weed instead of crack.
I’ll probably get the album….the cover art is rad….but its pretty weak that there are no Florida shows…
i think the only reason he keeps up the lyrical content is that is what deicide is. if he started singing about different themes they would lose alot of fans. fans expect god hating jesus bashing lyrics. i will say that its hard to do that many albums and still write good lyrics about the same ideas. as a fan myself i wish they would try something else. i like the new album even with the horrible title and i stopped listening to the lyrics a long time ago and pay more attension to the music. they are finally sounding like deicide again.
