Ryan Lipynsky (Unearthly Trance, The Howling Wind, Thralldom) is one of metal’s most creative yet underappreciated guitarists. So when I reviewed The Howling Wind’s terrific new record, I called for readers to create fictional guitar magazine covers featuring Lipynsky. Here are the three results.
Above is the winner, by Joe Dillingham. If he were editor of Guitar World, the (guitar) world would be a better place. Tabs of songs by Slayer, At the Gates, Deicide, Morbid Angel, and Coffinworm??? Sign me up for a lifetime subscription!

Despite massive respect to Dimebag Darrell, however, I’m not sure if guitar magazines need any more tributes to him. Practically every guitar magazine issue now is a tribute to Dimebag. Bryan Wall touched upon this repetitiveness in his entry above. 3 AC/DC songs, an Ozzy Osbourne one, and a Metallica one? Sounds about right. Guitar magazines are still trotting out the same songs that they did when I was a kid. That’s not right. The innovation in the guitar world takes place outside its magazines.

Finally, red5standingby, whom I interviewed here, contributes an entry using MS Paint. He is quite the genius with MS Paint – you can see his MS Paint skills here and his general artistic skills here.

Hilarious wtf moment…I am in coffinworm and was deeply confused until I read the article…and Yes, Mr. Lipynsky is a Guitar god…look for his new album on Shrapnel records.
Oh man if only. Someday….
Haha I like the recipient for the second one.
“Despite massive respect to Dimebag Darrell, however, I’m not sure if guitar magazines need any more tributes to him. Practically every guitar magazine issue now is a tribute to Dimebag.”
That’s funny, because that is exactly what I was thinking when I added it to the cover. It’s like every god damned month there’s a tribute to Dimebag. Maybe I should have added the word “Again!” to the title to make my intention more obvious. Also, man, the leading between Skeletonwitch and Ihsahn is all wonky.
haha this is hilarious. thanks guys! Ill be doing racer x covers soon. haha the coffinworm tabs rule as well! good stuff!
Brain Drill, eh? Yeah, their fans are definitely the target audience for these rags.
(Gotta say I do dig Ihsahn, though.)
When I saw there was potentially a Azagthoth-authorized (penned?!?) tab of “Where the Slime Lives” I almost started looking for my keys to go to my local newsstand … then I realized it, alas, does not exist (both the magazine and / or a ‘local newsstand’). Oh, well. I know they’ll come again someday.
Ryan is one of the best… Im with the sentiments here!
Thought of this post when I saw that the newest issue of Guitar World has Morbid Angel’s “Chapel Of Ghouls” tabbed out. Maybe there’s an IO reader among nestled among their staff?
I wonder if a Gorguts tab is too much to ask for.
Interestingly enough… when I was recording the howling wind album with colin he had gorguts tabs or sheet music for learning their tunes!
