Until recently, “hinder” to me was a racquetball term. Then readers mentioned Hinder twice in comments this week. I took this as a sign (a bad one). Dutifully, I looked up the band, only to be shocked that it had over 100 million MySpace profile views. (Don’t visit their MySpace yet, though – I’ll explain why below.)
The technical term for this is “false consensus effect”. Just because you and your buddies like metal doesn’t mean that everyone else likes metal. Yes, there is a world out there, and it listens to Hinder. (The world is a bad place.)
Hinder’s music is repulsive yet fascinating. It’s post-grunge like Nickelback and Creed, but with opportunistic feints at glam rock and metal: music-making by focus group. The result isn’t really music. It’s hooks, spiky haircuts, and airtight audio assemblages that embody the principle of “Don’t Bore Us, Get to the Chorus!” I am in awe of its ruthless efficiency.
Some metal bands are, too – namely Edguy and Sentenced, whose later records moved from metal to hard rock. They only wish they could write hits like Hinder. So I’ve put together 10 audio clips from Hinder, Edguy, and Sentenced. Your mission is to guess which band did which ones. DO NOT USE ANY RESOURCES OTHER THAN YOUR BRAIN. Don’t use MySpace, YouTube, Last.fm, audio recognition software, or even your own music collection. That’s no fun (not to mention needless work), and it’s cheating.

Oh god, Hinder. I thought Nickelback was pussy whiny man moose rock. That all changed when Hinder entered the picture. Oh, the pitfalls of having your heart broken by some suburban skank with a tramp stamp. Now you gotta wipe your tears off with that $100 Affliction shirt you just got. That’s the soundtrack Hinder is perfect for. I remember seeing that Visa gift card at the check out aisle at a Dominick’s once. Utterly disturbing.
I heard a comment from them in some interview…they said something to the effect that they were bummed that Nirvana killed hair metal, and wished they/Kurt had never existed.
That’s the kinda thing you say to piss people off and get publicity. I’ve ignored them ever since.
Always loved Pushead…he used to write a great music column in Thrasher back in the 80’s

Hey, I was about to say the same about Heroes del silencio
Great post Cosmo. Sometimes discovering awful bands is just as interesting. From time to time, one must expose oneself to bad music (or any art for that matter) to better appreciate the good.
Wow, they all sound like the same band. A couple kinda have an Edguy power metal-ish flair, and some sound kinda like Sentenced, but I dont really know what Hinder sounds like. For all I know, they’re all Hinder.
Holy fuck. This is shockingly hard. I’m also deeply disturbed that what I’m hearing suggests that Hinder might actually have some awesome riffs. Ouch.
I’ll be very curious to see the correct answers posted…

Well you guys know I am 110% old school 80’s Metal so this was a bit of a challenge for me having not heard ANY of these bands or their music before.
If HINDER is worse than NICKELBACK then I am sure I would not like them as I cringe when I see/hear N.B.
Nothing makes me cringe more than what some peeps are calling “Power Metal” these days though and I always see EdGuy’s name thrown around in that symphonic melodic wimpy/metal they (Euro bands in general in 2010) try to pass off as POWER METAL. so I am sure I wouldn’t enjoy them either.
That leaves: SENTENCED, which one reader likened to Savatage I think? However, it appears it’s the Savatage when they had already gone off the deep end or perhaps fell off the “Hall of the Mt. King” era’….yikes – give me “Power of the Night”, “Sirens” or the “Dungeons Are Calling” any day of the week.
The clips are too short to assemble any sort of recognition between them and can only be known by someone who knows all 3 bands and their music. I think it’s the actual “samey” production that is to blame. Is there a tie or connection between these bands perhaps? or their labels maybe?

**As far as the logo goes, at least PUSHEAD was original and did not rip off other bands logos! I still cherish my Japanese “Damage Inc.” Tour book (Metallica youngsters) from 1986 which is adorned with Pushead’s killer artwork throughout.
