| Not my abs by Cosmo Lee |
Want those abs? To have them, that is (not to hold them)? Then try The Spartacus Workout. Spartacus is a Roman gladiator TV series that premiered on Starz last Friday. The Spartacus Workout is inspired by the workout routine of the series’ male lead, Andy Whitfield (pictured above). The workout is online here, and in print in the February ‘10 issue of Men’s Health, which is on newsstands until February 9. If you do this workout, I recommend getting the magazine, as it contains the workout in a handy poster.
I’ve been looking for something like The Spartacus Workout for a while. Until I discovered it, I was doing a one-body-part-a-day weight training routine. This is standard practice, and it works. But it can take a long time — e.g., doing separate exercises for all three tricep heads — and it’s not terribly practical. Bicep curls, for example, are really only good for headlocks and drinking beer.
The Spartacus Workout addresses these problems. It centers around two concepts: compound exercises and high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Compound exercises hit multiple muscles at once. They are better training than isolation exercises (which hit only one muscle, e.g., bicep curls) for sports and daily life. HIIT is short, intense bursts of activity, as opposed to long, steady-state exercise (e.g., slogging it out on a treadmill). It has been demonstrated to be superior in boosting fat loss, strength, and endurance.

You may be wondering how metal ties into this. It has to do with the workout’s structure. The workout consists of doing 10 exercises for a minute each, with 15-second breaks between them, and a two-minute break after the last one. You do these 10 exercises three times. The workout takes about 45 minutes to complete.
I didn’t want to use some boring timer to count time, so I made a little mixtape to do that. It has 10 one-minute songs. Naturally, most are grindcore. For the 15-second and two-minute breaks, I put a synthesized female voice (she happens to have an Indian accent) to count down time over hip-hop beats from Cypress Hill and Da Lench Mob. The tape works perfectly for the workout. Just put it on repeat, and you’re good to go. Here’s the download link and track list.

A brutal workout requires a brutal soundtrack. And this may be the most brutal workout you’ll ever do. I’ve been doing it for over a week. Each time it has left me drenched in sweat, gasping for breath, and borderline nauseous — and I’m fitter than most. This workout comes from a men’s magazine, but I see no reason why women couldn’t do it (other than, say, pregnancy). The only equipment you’ll need is a light pair of dumbbells. Evidently the average man will burn 730 calories (give or take 130) by doing this workout. You’ll also burn calories afterwards, as it will jack up your metabolism something fierce. Download this mixtape, get to work, and tell me how it goes.

I'm gonna do it.
I'm psyched about this.
I can't see the workout because of work filters but by your description this sounds similer to the P90X workout advertised on TV.
Regardless, this has my interest.
If you're into this => http://crossfit.com
Life-changing shit, just sayin. "A new level of confidence and power."
Stations 4 and 8 look goddamned impossible (for me). Everything else looks doable, though.
What I would like is to have abs like these => http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bMteFx8LbM
… in my bedroom
I think this might be the only metal site that promotes a healthy lifestyle hahaha. I'll give this a try.
Hang on there, heime: What about all them br00tal burger posts? If they's healthy, I'm the new drummer for Fucking Champs.
Fucking killer playlist. If nothing else, it makes me want to rock the fuck out and I'm bound to burn some calories while doing that.
So trying this
This is much harder than it looks and it intense. I've never felt so sore and I just started getting back into working out. Be sure to drink a nice protein shake with Glutamine in it to help ease the soreness. You'll need it.
Here are the 10 exercises, in case you're curious. You'll need to refer to the workout to learn proper form.
1. Goblet squat
2. Mountain climber
3. Single-arm dumbbell swing
4. T-pushup
5. Split jump
6. Dumbbell row
7. Dumbbell side lunge and touch
8. Pushup-position row
9. Dumbbell lunge and rotation
10. Dumbbell push press
Rob – From what I understand, p90x is much more involved than this. p90x uses a lot more exercises (and equipment) and switches them up over several months. Like any workout routine, you'd want to switch out from this workout after 3-4 weeks to avoid plateaus.
Todd – Have you done Crossfit for long? That program confuses the hell out of me. There is so much stuff.
The ChaosPath – The key is not to overload on weights. You're doing exercises for a minute each, so you'll be doing fairly high reps. If using weights is too hard, you can start out weightless.
Also, Zuzana is one of the funniest online exercise presences around. I wonder if anyone actually watches her videos for the educational aspect.
raise and Stew – I suppose the burgers could be healthy if you skipped the fries, beer, cheese, toppings, and bun!
The Path Less Traveled speaks truth: get some protein (shake or bar) in your system after this (and any workout) to stimulate muscle recovery. Accompany the protein with fast-digesting carbs (a piece of fruit, white bread, candy in moderation) to speed the protein to your muscles.
Thanks for this. What type of weights have you been using?
fitter than most??? last pic i saw of you, it seemed to me that you had to run around in the shower to get wet. just kidding bro. love the metal and fitness combo.
canucklehead – I never said I was bigger than most
eunuch – As canucklehead pointed out, I'm not a big guy (about 130lb. dripping wet). For this workout, I actually use two pairs of dumbbells of different weights – 10lbs and 20lbs. (One light pair is fine to start with; I just wanted to calibrate more precisely.) I started out using the lighter set for exercises 4 and 7, and the heavier set for everything else. I recently switched to the heavier set for 7 as my body adjusted to the exercise.
This is fairly similar to the Spartan workout, which is what many of the actors in "300" were put through to get into shape. This one involves more variety though, might give it a shot. And that playlist is perfect.
Good stuff… my time to really zone out and listen to metal is during work outs… its really the only time I get an hour of uniterupted listening in… good post.
Cosmo, I've been doing Crossfit for a little over a year. And yeah, there's definitely a significant newbie barrier to overcome. Hugely worth it though.
Email me if you want and I'll give whatever tips or explanations you're looking for.
Although it's tough to get started and learn all the movements, the main concepts behind the
programming are relatively straight-forward once you get used to them.
Both the workout and the playlist are pretty awesome. The routine I've been following uses the same concepts of compound exercises plus HIIT, so I might have to give this a try whenever I get sick of that.
This blog has officially gone gay.
@invisible oranges
This playlist rules. Thanks for being awesome.
I made a couple tweaks to the filenames, including the exercise so you don't need a separate list.
Enjoy.

I've done the P90X and the P90X Plus routines for a while now and I tried this workout yesterday. It's similar to the P90X Plus in that you end up using lighter weights and higher reps with very short rests in between sets. P90X does more of the heavy weights for 8 – 10 reps with slightly longer breaks between the sets. I love the sound track you made because it makes it easy to keep the timing without constantly looking at you watch. Thanks cosmo. Metal Dave
I've never done any lifting beyond body weight stuff (pushups, pullups, crunches, etc.) because most lifting programs I've seen are there to build your muscles, not to develop them in ways that would be useful to actual life. And old lift coach once told me, "if you're not doing these lifts for practical muscle bulk, you're better off moving boulders for the rest of the day."
Kinda true, I'm sure some health nuts would say otherwise but that was half the training with the guy during the week. Going out to big ass boulder fields and shoving them to different spots, and that built more core strength than anything else I did.
The only training program I've stuck with is one I did called Air Alert II. It's up to four or something now, but it's meant to increase your jumping height and power, particularly for basketball. I've kept doing it because the workout itself is all body weight and insanely difficult to maintain on the later weeks. Never been in better shape than when I was doing that program.
Also, taking a bongrip right after a big workout, no better feeling.
Man, I have been looking for something like this for such a long while. This is why the off-topic posts are just as good as the metal ones!
I puked! but then i finished all 3 circuits anyway. This is my february workout!
Oh my god it is so hard
This work out has definitely got me sweating! I love it. Thanks for the recommendation. I started slow and worked my way up through repetition (I even alternate this one with the part II of this blog on the Spartacus workout)…
I’m getting excited about finding my own bunch of one minute long songs to rockout/workout to!
Cheers!
No problem, Stax. It’s great to see people actually trying this workout.
Thank you for sharing the soundtrack. Just started the original Spartacus workout, and this makes it a lot more fun. I am grateful.
Unfortunately, the playlist has been tagged as copy written material – any other download links available?
I did it last night and it wrecked me.
