Above is the first part of a three-part video about metal elitism. It’s just two guys shooting the breeze in a restaurant, and the editing is loose; this should have been a single five-minute video. But they make interesting points about the “us vs. them” mentality of metal elitists, the fact that most people don’t have the time to listen to thousands of bands because they have actual lives, and more. Below are links to parts two and three, along with some highlights.
“The more technical the metal is, the more elitist the people are.”
“They’re totally trying to dehumanize people that like a certain type of music. That’s really what pisses me off about metal elitists.”
“How has being a metal elitist helped you? Has it made you a better person? Has it improved your life?”
“Most importantly, let other people listen to what they want. One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned in my life with anything is you cannot be trying to control other people.”

The only reason anyone could have to sob about "metal elitism" is that they spend too much time on the internets reading Youtube comments.
I see the point, but I'm with Donkey. If these guys are so comfortably mature, why do they make the time to be this defensive? If they lived their words, they wouldn't need to complain about metal elitists. They'd just be content with themselves
I'm sorry, I can't listen to this. "There's trekkies, there's magic the gathering, there's D&D; nerds…" I have no time for this mentality.
I've met a lot of people that self-define as elitists and they weren't alike in either their reasoning or their methods. Generalizations and cliches don't help understand individuals.
I hate and pretty much automatically reject any piece of writing, commentary, anything that starts with "I know this is gonna piss a lot of people off, but…" No matter how solid the points you might be making, to take that kind of posturing approach right up front is annoying as fuck.
He's basically saying "I hate how those guys adhere to an 'us vs. them' philosophy", which is pretty funny, because he just basically said that he's in a different category, effectively making himself a follower of the "us vs. them"
yeah, pretty ironic
I don't understand what Anonymous above means, Limp Bizkit has nothing to do with metal.
I love Manowar. And shrimp cocktail.
Watching these guys is like torture. Scratch that. Is torture.
I think that when people find a community of other like-minded people, they are happier than when they had not.
These guy seem rather hypocritical. One of their main complaints is that a "metal elitist" views himself/herself as being better than a lot of other people. Yet, this guy is basically insinuating that he's a better human being than all of these "elitists". I guess the comparison I would point to is that as much as there are in a traditional sense rich/cultured elitists in society, there's plenty of poor/uncultured people who look down upon the other group. This is just playing the "Us vs. Them" game from the opposite side of the fence.
The Wolf – That's a good observation.
Yeah Cosmo I'm afraid I have to agree with the general sentiment on this video. this video strikes me as dangerously close to those "what being a juggalo means to me" testimonials. some 300 pound girl/guy gets intimate with their webcam and opines about the problems they see in their "scene" (also those videos ALWAYS start with "ok so I know this video might piss a lot of people off").
the only reason these uber nerds would piss anyone off is if you spend too much time around them. all metal fans are elitists in some regard. either the metal bands they like are better than other metal bands or they're better than the mainstream bands or whatever. it's built into the genre structurally. who can shred better, drum faster, sing higher/lower/meaner, whatever.
