One common feature of Internet forums is the recommendation thread. Regarding certain things, people ask for recommendations, which others supply. Such threads are wonderful laboratories for observing (a) the perversity of people’s interests, and (b) the willingness of others to enable such perversity. Take, for example, metal. You’ll see someone ask, “I want Romanian black metal bands with midget vocalists” — and people will jump right in with recommendations. Below are the top 10 threads from the recommendation section of metal-archives.com’s forum. I have included the original requests completely unedited.

Very Specific Racist Bands
I’m looking for some racist bands, but not just any racist band. This is a very specific, picky request. I want the subject matter to be white supremacy. The band needs to be from America, preferred to be from the southern United States. This is where it gets real tricky; I don’t want any of that Nazi preaching crap. I hate socialism and most Nazi ideals, so that means no NS Black Metal. Keep it American and proud to be white.

Metal Songs with one good riff
Cane you name some metal songs with only 1 good riff and everything else in the song is complete garbage.
Can you think of any songs like this?
For me, the main riff from Stop by Death Angel is the only redeeming part of the song; and everything else sucks big time, especially the solo.

Humming in metal??
so i was listening to the Shining a few mins ago and one of the songs is the famous classical song with the singer humming along wit hit, i found it eerie and dark as fuck.
Any other songs you can think of with humming in it?

Vocalists who use the whistle register
Just wondering if there are any Heavy Metal vocalists who use the whistle register. I know it’s more common in female singers than in males and I have yet to see it in Heavy Metal (I have only heard it in Opera Arias and pop songs.)
Just an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6wSyIdwCFM

Children’s/Educational Metal
This request is going to sound really weird. Anyone know any children’s metal or educational metal aside of the Thunderlords? Minimally any child-friendly metal, or something like Green Jelly (particularly “Three Little Piggys”), but with less cursing?

Stress Management Metal
I am a person who has serious problems with relaxing. I am always worried, nervous and so and I really need to learn to manage this. If there is anyone who is experienced in managing stress and know good methods; could you give me some advice in how to do so and maybe recomennd me some metal songs/albums that are useful for this purpose. I planned to get Karl Sanders album, as it seems very atmospheric and calm.

Happy black metal
I’m looking for more obscure BM bands whose members have gone past that teen-angst part of their lives and are able to have fun with their BM. Laid back, fun and happy but mature. Examples would be Samael – Ceremony of Opposites, Dissection, Master’s Hammer. Root.

Black metal with falsetto screams sprinkled throughout
I’m looking for black metal bands who use random falsetto screams throughout their songs.
Ever listen to Force of Darkness (Chile)? How about The Third Storm of Cythraul by Absu, or the two full lengths by Anal Vomit? I’m looking for a vocal style similar to this…harsh vocals with random falsetto screams. Any suggestions?

Surprise melodies in dark, evil or brutal music
Looking for music that is typically very evil or brutal sounding, but with bursts of huge melodic guitar driven harmonies randomly popping up out of the middle of nowhere. Best examples I can think of would be the newest Blut Aus Nord, Anaal Nathrakh, Forgotten Tomb or Tyranny. From the examples of the technique I’ve found I’m thinking black and doom metal are likely to be the most common genres, but any extreme genre will do.

Fun Metal Recommendations?
I’m usually more of a black metal listener, but at the moment I feel like listening to some fun metal, preferably power. Keep in mind that I don’t want anything too cheesy, but something that makes you feel awesome. Any recommendations?

I'm looking for a little bit boring thrash with great vocalists,
can anyone help me out?
one good riff per song : a tremendous amount of the Judas Priest back catalogue.
Really funny ESL lyrics should be up there.
Oh totally, I hate when White Power music gets ruined by those pesky Nazis too. I mean, can't a man just be a racist scumbag and Rock-out without all that complicated politics stuff?
False propositions are those that are false in the actual world. To wit: One good riff per song : A tremendous amount of the Judas Priest back catalogue.
Heh, Stress Management Metal – that'd be a good way to describe an album I did earlier this year.

Right?
Geez louise, that whistle register video was something else. I thought my eardrums were going to pop.
Desperately looking for a shoegaze Suffocation with Croatian female vocals – oh, and keyboards. I'll be forever in your debt.
I'm desperately looking for some extreme Black Metal, like Marduk or Mayhem, but preferably without all Rhode negative vibes and satanic lyrics. And, come to think of it, more melody would be awesome. And a Timbaland or N.E.R.D. production would fit the specification perfectly.
Any suggestions?
… damn spell-checker: "those negative vibes", "Rhode" Island has nothing to do with this. Sorry.
Humming in songs…that's difficult. That one song on Metallica's Garage Days? I'm drawing a blank.
I'm looking for symphonic black metal bands where the girl doesn't play the keyboards or dress like a goth chick.
Joking aside, I understand the desires of the 'black metal with falsetto screams sprinkled throughout'. It also works for death metal.
David Lee Roth uses whistle register throughout the Van Halen albums. It was pretty impressive.
