Everyone’s favorite furniture-headed death metallers are back. On October 20, Australia’s Portal will release Swarth on Profound Lore. (See album cover here.) Like its predecessor Outre (reviewed here), the album should delight, annoy, terrify, and polarize. For a taste, hear “Larvae” below. It exemplifies what makes Portal so fresh: turbulent dissonance, otherworldly vocals, and no quarter in any quarter. They will scorch the States for the first time next year, at Maryland Deathfest 2010. Let’s hope they play on the inside stage. Sunlight for this music would just be wrong.

i'll give them an originality score of 10 that's for sure.
sweet! not just original but as you say, consistently terrifying. this is what hell sounds like.
Ahhh Portal eh? I saw them at their last Adelaide show. It's good stuff: creepiest band ever to watch live, which is awesome.
I like this song. It's different from Outre', but still very creepy and otherworldy.
On another note, it seems like this is coming out the same time as the Baroness and Converge albums.
Ha! I'm trying to imagine Portal playing in the sun…that would be terrible…I'm looking forward to seeing them.
