Since I’m moving soon, I’m giving away CD’s over the next few weeks. I’ve organized these giveaways by genre. First up is black metal. I’m giving away 30 CD’s to a first prize winner, and 10 CD’s to a second prize winner. These consist of demos, promos (including the latest from Singapore’s Impiety, pictured above), and finished releases from the past year from labels including Candlelight, Moribund, Norma Evangelium Diaboli, Agonia, Paragon, and more. For a chance to win, email invisibleoranges at gmail dot com by midnight EST, Thursday, August 13, with the subject header “Black is the night” and your full name and address. I will pick winners randomly.
I’m also curious what people are listening to now black metal-wise. Any recommendations, new or old?

Still playing the last two songs on the second Isengard record. Blows the whole goddamn genre outta the water to this day.
Oranssi Pazuzu
Exhausted Prayer
Liturgy (WOOOO!!!!)
Pantheon I
Amesoeurs
Black Anvil
Blut Aus Nord – the Work that Transforms God
Hennes Siste Host – Host (how'd I miss it last year?)
What do you get from the Liturgy record, Etan? I'm not feeling it at all. Also, what is the Pantheon I like?
I'm listening to:
- the new BLODFEST album on tape (you can hear samplers here: http://www.nonagram.dk)
- Nebrus; a duo from Italy. They have one demo with raw mix online on myspace
- Azrael (from the demos and onwards)
- End "III"
- Savnock demo
- Voqkrre from France
- Nocratai + Rant666
and my cd player during evening drive can't get enough of dissection and first emperor.
DSO, Katharsis…pretty much it for newer releases.
NoEvDia and Profound Lore seem to sign only awesome bands. There hasn't been anything that has utterly blown my mind in 2009 so far (although I really enjoy the new Teitanblood and I'm currently playing a track off the new Katharsis record on my radio show). As far as recommendations are concerned with newer stuff, the "orthodox" black metal that NoEvDia specialize consistently awesome. I'd especially recommend:
Katharsis- WorldWithoutEnd
Funeral Mist- Salvation
As far as US stuff is concerned, check out:
Leviathan- Massive Conspiracy Against All Life
Bahimiron- Southern Nihilizm
and another one of my favourite bands is Gnaw Their Tongues, which does black/industrial/noise stuff.
Gnaw Their Tongues- Reeking, Pained and Shuddering
I expect to win all of those CDs for my wonderful recommendations and impeccable taste in black metal!
Definite second vote for the Funeral Mist disc. My distaste for the overwhelming majority of black metal is pretty well-documented, but that album is killer.
Listening to the Urgehal "The Eternal Eclipse" comp a lot lately.
I'm liking the new Beherit album lately,as well as the LSOD/ Valdur split.
Cosmo already knows about it, but as far as I'm concerned, the new Teitanblood is king.
I've also been enjoying Cult of Daath lately. They aren't new, really, and they aren't innovative either, but they are doing pretty much my favorite thing (i.e., almost intolerably primitive black thrash that still sounds like thrash, with lyrics that are both obscene AND blasphemous).
Woe is pretty good too, especially for a one-man USBM guy. I know a lot of people on here hate that stuff, but some people like it, and Woe is a great example of a guy working in that style who remembers that heavy metal is supposed to have bottom end.
temple of baal
behexen
blackblood division
craft
hod (they are one good live band to boo)
krallice
sarke
Urskumug
Animus – Hallucinations: Ideals, Voltigeurs – Tentacle Rape, Habsyll – MMVIII, Amocoma – Go To Hell, Procer Veneficus – Convoy (Part 2), Lyrinx – Ending The Circle Of Life, Mamaleek – Fever Dream, Nasheim – Evighet/Undergang, Nightbringer – Death & The Black Work,
Persistence In Mourning – The Undead Shall Rise, These are all killer releases all the way thru dude. JY
Cosmo,
The Liturgy record feels like it's constantly ready to unspool into white noise and drums. I tune out the guitars/vox every now and then and I feel like I'm listening to Peter Br
The Ancestors 7"s are the only black metal releases I've been listening tp recently. Super raw, super primitive punkish black metal in the style of Ildjarn.
Although still in their nascent state, they haven't really released anything, but you should check out Shyy from Brazil. They are one of those black metal/post rock, amesoeurs like band. Same goes for Heretoir, another band worth listening too.
For black metal, I've been into
Setherial – Nord
Nightbringer – Rex ex Ordine Throni
the new Averse Sefira and Blut Aus Nord
There's a surprising amount of support here for the punky, primitive stuff. Maybe we should cover more of it. I myself have tired of the sound but I know Jess is into it.
The last Katharsis sort of bored me. But so many people are recommending it, both here and elsewhere, that I'll give it another try.
I strongly recommend Foscor's latest, but won't write about it until I see some physical distribution for it.
Listening to lately:
Nachtmystium – Doomsday Derelicts
Funeral Mist – Maranatha (Best new black metal album of recent years IMO)
Watain – Casus Luciferi
Ulver – Nattens Madrigal (My first Ulver album; I just picked this up a few days ago –holy shit! Awesome! Now, I know where Weakling, Kralice, and Wolves in the Throne Room, etc. come from)
Burzum – Burzum
Goatwhore – Carving Out the Eyes of God
Amesoeurs – Amesoeurs – lots of weird transitions from the shoegazey pop to the cyclical metal riffing. I think I like this better than Alcest, since I'm rather burnt on their (& other's) very obvious My Bloody Valentine worship.
Dishammer – not really Black Metal per se, but hammering d-beat with a blackend vocal rasp
Elk/Carrion – split CD – Great, epic BM vs. dark noise drones. Both from Oakland.
Menace Ruine
Absu
+ lots of new & old releases from Wm. Berger's "My Castle of Quiet" on WFMU. Also, Venom's – Possessed LP. I know a lot of people hate it but hell, Mantis' guitar playing is stellar.
Volahn killed it this summer on tour. I am going to order their lp on Kalxon soon.
Aura Noir – - I never get tired of them
Hiems
Nachtmystium
Goatwhore
Brown Jenkins, I'm not usually into raw stuff like that, thanks for posting about them.
Sarcofago and their ilk
Anything thrashy (ie Absu, Black Anvil, Aura Noir, Skeletonwitch) that isn't neo-thrash.
Azarath
Panzerchrist
Necrophobic
Immortal
Bastard Sapling
i'm still a massive fan of Behemoth's 'And the Forests Dream Eternal…' cool to see where such an awesome band came from
The new Beherit album is really good, much better (and much closer to the band's original sound) than I had anticipated. The first two albums by Brown Jenkins are still great, and while I haven't heard the newer stuff yet, I have no reason to doubt it won't be every bit as good. I also second the Gnaw Their Tongues recommendation; everything I've heard by GTT (the demos and several albums, including the one on Crucial Blast) are all intense, scary shit. There's also a band called Servile Sect that straddle the line between noise and black metal who are definitely worth checking out.
- Infernal War – all
- Hotbild – all
- Oranssi Pazuzu – Muukalainen Puhuu
- Klabautamann – Merkur
- Anaal Nathrakh – In The Constellation Of The Black Widow
- Master's Hammer – Ritu
I've been listening pretty heavily to the Worship Black Twilight compilation. The best band on it is Ashdautas, and their previous release "Where the Sun is Silent" is awesome as well.
>The last Katharsis sort of bored me. But so many people are recommending it, both here and elsewhere, that I'll give it another try.
It's not as crazy as the last album, but it's still really good, IMO. I noticed that if one listens to it at different volume levels different parts of the mix really stand out…like little "hidden" vocal segments, etc. Also, if you haven't heard it yet…my favorite USBM release of the last few years is Negative Plane's "Et In Saecula Saeculorum." That's a beautiful album, IMO.
>The first two albums by Brown Jenkins are still great, and while I haven't heard the newer stuff yet, I have no reason to doubt it won't be every bit as good.
The new one totally crushes the other two CDs, IMO. Hopefully fans of the band will be pleased. It will be out soon…

Volahn's "Dimensi
UA – I actually reviewed Negative Plane (not very well) in the early days of this site:
http://invisibleoranges.com/2006/11/negative-plane-et-in-saecula.html
Also, if you look closely, you will notice that Leila of Saros is wearing a Negative Plane shirt:
http://invisibleoranges.com/2009/07/interview-saros.html
I also reviewed Ashdautas sometime ago for this site, but my enthusiasm for that sound has considerably decreased.
Awesome. The more people that know about them the better, IMO. They're a great band.
njiqahdda-nji njiijn njiiijn, mrtyu-ornate shroud, wrnlrd-oneiromantical war, blood of the black owl -a feral spirit, bong/quttinirpaaq-split, black math horseman-wyllt, celestia-frigidiis apotheosia:abstinencia genesiis, negura bunget-om, endless blizzard-remember your death, a storm of light & nadja-primitive north, kreng-l'autopsie phenomenale de dieu, spektr-near death experience, circle of ouroborus-old ghosts, bone awl-not for our feet.
Thanks for providing a forum for sounding off on what I'm into. It's great to hear suggestions from other people in this community.
I just barely discovered Funeral Mist's Salvation. Spectacular record! I figure I'll need to check out Marduk's last two on account of Mortuus being on both.
DSO – Mass Grave Aesthetics. As far as long DSO songs go, it's more accessible than Chaining the Kacheton. In fact, it's probably the most accessible thing they've done. I've now taken in most of their newer stuff. Looking forward to checking out the old stuff before the big changes were made.
Drudkh – Blood in Our Wells. Forget the new one. It stinks! This is gorgeous!
Cobalt – Gin. Not really black metal, but it's closer to that than anything else. This one is so intense and powerful. It needs more attention.
Speaking of more attention, the new Nightbringer needs some. It's one hell of an album!
Weakling
Gorgoroth – Incipit Satan (nowhere near as good as Under the Sign of Hell)
Krieg – After devouring Destruction Ritual I'm now loving the Patrick Bateman EP. Krieg have one of the most intense vocalists in the USBM scene. He's the American Attila (although he sounds nothing like him).
Leviathan – Massive Conspiracy Against All Life & Lurker of Chalice
Negura Bunget – 'N Crugu Bradului and OM. Please discover these guys.
Classics-
Beherit – The Oath of the Black Blood
Sarcofago – INRI
Darkthrone – Panzerfaust
Burzum – Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Satyricon – 1st record. I'm not sure about these guys…
Ulver – The Madrigal of Night (I want to like this more but it's impossible to listen to at high volumes. It's the most treble heavy album I've ever heard.)
I'm also dabbling in: Amesouers, Agalloch, Absu, Watain, Von, Primordial, Kampfar, Havohej, Enslaved, Draugar, Xasthur, Bone Awl, Wolves… , Katharsis and Dissection.
Excellent suggestions so far hear some new mixed with the old all must be heard. Jabladav – Black as pitch , Panopticon – Collapse , Sacrificia Mortuorum – Damnatorium , Impavadia – Eerie sceneries , Eagle Twin – The unkindness of crows , Greymachine – Disconnected , Arkh Sva/Winter Funeral – Mikalpkhis bia ozongon , Svart – Vanara, vanmacht och avsmak , Ashes – Hymn to a grey sky , Dawnfall – Drei kaume , Dukkha/Black Vomit – split , Ghast/Yoga – split , Jumalhamara – Slaughter the messanger , HKY – HKY , GOG – Mist from the random more , Black Hell – How the rest was lost , Ancestral – Avowal , October Falls – The womb ofprimordial nature , Secht – True narcotic black metal , Azrael – Act III:Self & Act IV:Goat , WITTR – Black cascade , Burzum – Filosofem
This one is slaying me…
+ Altar Of Plagues, (album) White Tomb +
Just so damn good. I'm surprised it isn't getting more press.
Oranssi Pazuzu

Goatwhore
Funeral Mist
Krallice (new album out this year!)
Arkhon Infaustus
Where's … Black Boned Angel-Verdun, L'Acephale – Malefeasance & Stahlhartes Gehause, Throne Of Katarsis – Helvete: Det Iskalde Morket , Woburn House – Monstrous Manoeuvres In The Mushroom Maze , Wolok – Caput Mortuum , Animal Hospital – Memory…
I'm big time into the new Deafest album, Eroding Peaks. Ambient/Melodic black metal that has a Mono vibe, if you can dig that. Reviewed it over here, and it's available for free download(from the band) here.
