As we learned from this year’s Maryland Deathfest, metal is the enemy of the sun. Yet earlier this month, Brooklyn’s Atakke played in Manhattan’s Tompkins Square Park in broad daylight. Metal bands have played in parks before — Animosity did it in San Francisco — but this time was especially weird. Tompkins Square Park was once seedy, but has undergone gentrification. Now, according to Wikipedia, “the park attracts young families, students and seniors as well as tourists from all over the globe.” Barf! (It has a nice dog run, though.) Atakke is a young band that recalls early Bolt Thrower, early German thrash, and very early Sepultura. Its sound is dirty, and so are its members. To see them rough up Tompkins Square Park is a delight. They are definitely a band to watch. Atakke has put out two 7″s, March to the Gallows and Avalanche. Kylesa’s Phillip Cope produced the latter. Hopefully a full-length will follow soon.

That lady in the red pants and fanny pack dancing and clapping along=METAL AS FUCK
Love this band, one of NY's great undiscovered secrets!
Used to have a rehearsal space next to these guys, they knocked out a great version of Dead Embryonic Cells once…
Surprisingly decent. I took some notes:
* I disapprove of the ESP SG knockoffs, but the Ironbird evens it out
* Thank god the vocalist does not have dreads
* Cymbals at six feet height = well done
* Red pants woman is very good
I used to have an ESP SG knockoff, the lowest model. It was awesome! Sounded, played, and looked great. Quite an undervalued axe.
But didn't it always feel like you were just looking at a picture of a great guitar? (I do agree I would probably rather play an LTD than an Epiphone though.)
My ESP looked different enough from an SG so that it was more of a cousin (or nephew/niece) rather than a copy. It was curvier and had a beautiful flametop finish…kind of like the Al Di Meola picture below, minus the hippie colors.
Of course, the original SG has no substitute, but until I get the ducats for one, I'm happy to play stuff inspired by it.
Also: the drummer is wearing combat boots. Respekt!
