Keelhaul, Minsk, Unearthly Trance, Defeatist, and Stats are playing at Brooklyn’s Public Assembly this Sunday, August 2 (8pm, 70 North 6th St., flyer here). What a lineup! We reviewed Minsk and Defeatist here and here, and saw Unearthly Trance live here. Despite all the heavy hitters, the reunited Keelhaul will be the big draw. Their new record, Triumphant Return to Obscurity (out on Hydra Head anywhere from July 21 to August 18), is hot. It’s math rock, the good kind, the gritty kind, with chewy tones. You can hear a clip from it below. Think Don Cab, Dysrhythmia, Botch, even early Mastodon. It all comes from the same place: kicking your ass in complicated ways.
I’m giving away a pair of tickets to this show. For a chance to win, email invisibleoranges at gmail dot com by midnight EST, Wednesday, July 29, with the subject header “Operation Keelhaul” and your full name. I will randomly choose a winner.

Shit, I think my head just exploded. I can't believe I'm actually going to be in NYC for this!
this band is ridiculously underrated.
Here are some nice photos of a recent Defeatist show:

Cosmo – I definitely think "kicking your ass in complicated ways" should be the subtitle for your blog. You gotta trademark that shit.
lou – I'm not sure how I feel about that. I think I'd rather kick ass in a simple way.
Man, I wish I lived in NYC. Keelhaul is a fist to the face live, absolutely killer. I agree with Ben, and I'll go one further: Keelhaul is one of the most underrated bands of the last ten years. Their second album is Top Ten of the decade material.
SCION RETURNS!!!!
Just wanted to say thanks again for the tickets, Cosmo. This show will be all kinds of epic!
