Tombs journey through genres effectively. On the surface, Winter Hours (Relapse, 2009) falls under typical progressive metal expectations. Rather, this turbulent trio flirts with down-tuned channels, shoegaze interludes, and even black metal. These ever-changing varieties aren’t just homage to influences; sounds of frontman Mike Hill’s past projects, Anodyne and Versoma, persist throughout Winter Hours.
This album requires time and patience. To identify its full potential, one must first overcome “Gossamer.” Percussion and guitars churn the intro to grease, coating Hill’s wail. His voice is offbeat and harsh, becoming more unforgiving with each track. The tremolo picking and blast beats of “Golden Eyes” scorch faces with blackened soul. Hill doesn’t hold back his howl until “Story of a Room,” a somber lullaby full of fragile reverb. Winter Hours has difficult ingredients, but when it is carefully consumed, it holds attention hostage.

Love this CD. Will probably be a top 5 for many this year.
Amazingly powerful band- both live and on record. A little partial to the self-titled, but I’m sure this one will grow on me in time. “Gossamer” and “Beneath the Toxic Jungle” are killer. Had the luck to play a show with these guys once, they totally floored me.
Cool! Good to know you thought the live set was “flooring.” I’d be interested in seeing them.
