Isis have posted a track, “20 Minutes / 40 Years,” from their new record, Wavering Radiant, out May 5th on Ipecac. It’s both interesting and not. The intro is the best part, with nocturnal atmospherics and indefinite tonality. It reminds me of ’80s action movies, in the non-action parts. As for the song’s body – well, it’s Isis. They’ve written the same song for a while now. It’s a good one, oft-imitated by lesser bands. But it’s not half as avant-garde as Isis, or others, claim. In fact, it’s rather friendly. At high volume live, it’s like a gentle bath. That’s Isis’ appeal – inclusive vibe, exclusive packaging. I prefer more challenging sounds, but Isis are the best at what they do. Judging by this preview, that should continue.

I completely hear that ’80s action movie thing, like in a Michael Mann flick or something.
I’ll make a note to add this to my “sleeping music” playlist when it’s released.
I don’t mean that in a good way.
The new album’s pretty good; keyboards (and oddly retro keyboard sounds) are more dominant than they’ve ever been, and there’s quite a bit of, dare I say it, blues in the guitar. It’s almost like Isis and Mastodon had the same back-to-the-’70s brainstorm in the studio.
I can’t stand Isis. Talk about sleepy-time for metalheads. They’re like a watered-down, ni-night version of Neurosis sans all the awesome.
Isis has been circling the drain since the early EPs. Too bad they stopped trying to sound like Godflesh, because now they just sound like the suck.
The criticism that “they [Isis] have written the same song for a while now” can be leveled at 95% of the bands out there in the world. Eh, probably more…
