Re: Slayer’s first album, someone can’t just leave this comment – “Slagel sent me an advance tape of the album several months before its release” – and slink away unnoticed. That someone is Umlaut, a true metal old-schooler. His blog recently documented his 34th (!) time seeing Metallica. Dig his mind-blowing photo set on Flickr – flyers, set lists, live photos of Metallica, Slayer, Exodus et al. from 1981 onwards. He took pictures, did a zine, hung out with bands, and corresponded with Lars Ulrich. Metallica’s first headlining show in SF, Slayer’s first show in SF, Metallica’s first show with Cliff Burton – Umlaut was there. He also captured Burton’s first rehearsal with Metallica. You can read the account and see photos here.

Has me beat!
I was particularly intrigued by Mustaine’s cue card, “lord take you to hell”. I wonder what the fine details of this banter to the audience was, ha ha ha…..
Yeah, for me the most surreal part of the photos is Mustaine’s camaraderie (or at least partying) with Metallica back in the day.
The yellow pants of the guy from the Scorpions were also spectacular.
Exodus’ tight blue and black pants are a sight for sore eyes.
Yeah, they do seem to have a comraderie; photographically, anyways.
Mustaine STILL hates those guys, still has that seething hatred for being turfed. I think that it was more a case of too many people trying to lead…..it would have been interesting had they made music for longer, but then there would have been too much tension in the band. You wonder if Mustaine would have wanted to take over singing, or whether he’d push for more singing of his own songs and whatnot.
Tension can make a band better or it can rip it apart. There’s always specific reasons why people leave or get kicked out….that’s why I find it funny that bands will cite “irreconcileable differences” or “musical differences”, but really, there’s gotta be a specific instance that is the final straw. You kinda wonder whether Mustaine ate the last piece of pie or tried to get in one too many choruses in one too many songs or whatever, or just hoarded one too many women or whatever, heh.
FYI: Below is a link to download a piece the Metallica Fan Club asked me to write a couple of years ago about the Old S.F. Metal Days:

That was amazing, Umlaut. Thanks so much for sharing.
