Set the controls for the heart of Chicago – Kuma’s, the best burger joint in the world, is sponsoring Doom Fest, a two-day festival (Dec. 20 and 21) at the Double Door (1572 N. Milwaukee Ave.). In keeping with Kuma’s community spirit – its bar donates earnings each month to various causes – all proceeds will go to charity. The lineups are killer. First day highlights include Indian’s sludgy pummelings, Samothrace’s soulful doom, and the amazing, mighty Kongh, who journey from Sweden to make their first US appearance. Second day highlights include the beefy Americana of Across Tundras, the savage lashings of Lair of the Minotaur, and the drum machine grind of Plague Bringer. The lineups aren’t 100% doom, but they are 100% heavy. Invisible oranges will be raised aplenty.

Thanks to Trevor for the lineups/poster update.

I’m pretty anti-big-city-sprawling-urban-areas but this is one tempting 7 hour drive. Too bad I don’t own a car. Is the doomed Blagojevich gonna be there?
I’m only 2 hours away from this. Wish I could go. The Double Door would be a great place to see these bands!
If Blago showed up, he’d get mauled.
onerode – You should make it to Kuma’s at least once in your life. And Chicago has its charms, including Metal Haven.
As a Chicagoan, as a Kuma’s frequenter, and as Indian’s original drummer (on the Godslave 7″ and The Unquiet Sky), I’m slightly disappointed in this lackluster lineup, especially since the name is “Doomfest” but most of those bands are not doom. There are other heavy-as-fuck bands, both from Chicago and nationwide (no reason to go overseas to get more heavy), that deserve to be on this highly anticipated lineup.
From Chicago, I would have liked to see included:
? Behold! The Living Corpse (reunion show?)
? Buried at Sea (reunion show?)
? Lord Blasphemer
? Raise the Red Lantern
? Sweet Cobra
And from elsewhere in the US:
? Kylesa
? Middian
? Rwake
? Sourvein
? Weedeater
? Zoroaster
There’s definitely more. And I’m fully aware of the possibility that these bands were considered, but for one reason or another, perhaps they couldn’t make it. But, there’s also a number of bands on the current lineup that don’t hold a candle to their metal brethren.
Look, I love Kuma’s, and I totally appreciate their philanthropy and desire to better the world through the celebration of good food and heavy music. This is just my opinion, you know? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’ll still go to this show. And I’ll still eat the shit out of a Mastodon burger at Kuma’s.
Hmm.. I live in Atlanta, I can do this.
I’m so tempted to go!
Brian – Sweet Cobra would be sweet indeed, though these lineups are hardly weak. I’m sure Kuma’s had to consider budget and band touring in assembling its fest. It’s hard enough to put together one show, much less an entire fest.
Anon – You should do it. And eat at Kuma’s.
I’m on the northside and hit up Kuma’s often. Not sure I can do the show, being in the restaurant industry and having a new daughter… but I thought I’d raise a few e-oranges in support of Kuma’s.
High on Fire vs Mayhem burger. Never sure which one wins.
For their specialty burgers, I got smitten by Insect Warfare, Nachtmystium, Brujeria, Testament and RWake. As fas as the regular menu goes, my top 5 are the Neurosis, High on Fire, Plague Bringer, Darkthrone and YOB.
I’m definitely a Kuma’s regular till I die of a heart attack. It will be well worth it though.
What I’ve noticed since Kuma’s changed their format early last year is that there have been a lot imitators popping up around town making half ass rip offs and worse, giving them lame names. I encountered a hotdog place that opened early this year called Rockstar dogs and they have hotdogs named after Sting and Justin Timberlake. I was only there once, the hotdogs were horrible and were populated by clueless yuppies who wear those ironic Affliction and Ed Hary shirts that they think makes them “rock” and I’ll never go there again.
My only gripe on the line-up is that Deadbird was on there, and now they’re not. As long as I finally get to see Samothrace, I’ll be happy as a clam.
It would be great if they sold White Castle-sized Kuma’s burgers at the bar.
if i wasn’t sick, i’d definitely go to this. samothrace put on one of the best live sets i’ve ever seen, i’ve been listening to across tundras for awhile, minsk is fucking sick as hell, indian’s good from what i heard and i’m curious about kogh.
btw be sure to check out beneath oblivion; they’re sludgey doom from here and are the only local band i actualy go out of my way to see (besides hellnation, of course…).
Beneath Oblivion crashed at my place last Saturday night. Nice, polite dudes. Both nights were amazing although the turnout wasn’t that much because of the snowstorm last Saturday and the bitter cold last night. Regardless, the bands I got to see (not a whole lot because of traffic/work both those nights) were amazing. Indian unfortunately cancelled Saturday, Jungle Rot had to cancel last minute because 2 of the guys got into a car accident, they were unhurt though. Most especially Kongh and Samothrace. They killed it that weekend.
I was able to take pics of Minsk, Samothrace and some Kongh (until my memory card fucked up in the middle of their set) on Saturday and Altas Moth, Plague Bringer and Yakuza on Sunday. I’ll set up a flickr stream for that once I upload and touch up the images.
It was a GREAT two nights! Best of all were Plague Bringer, Samothrace, and Kongh.
Thanks for the reports, guys. I know the Midwest has had gnarly weather, so it’s interesting and heartening to see people come out for metal regardless.
