Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)

Top 10 Reasons Why the Video for Journey’s “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” Rules Hard

10. Air instruments, including air keyboards
9. Super-manly white pants
8. Super-unmanly Steinberger bass
7. Mullets galore
6. Band seemingly playing in back of IKEA
5. Icy blonde in leather miniskirt
4. Unnecessary slow motion sequences
3. Scorpions-style synchronized mugging at camera
2. Steve Perry’s constant O faces
1. Drummer’s “FOOSBALL” shirt

Nerd that I am, I tracked down covers of “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart).” Mercifully, there are few. The two recorded versions I found are both awful. The first is by metalcore outfit Nientara; the second is by power metal singer André Matos (ex-Angra). (I’m surprised this song doesn’t have more power metal covers. It would be right up Edguy’s alley.) I urge you not to waste your time by clicking on the play buttons to hear just how bad these covers are.

Marginally better are two hip hop tracks that sample/replay the “Separate Ways” hook. The first is “Worlds Apart” by S.A.S. featuring Jae Millz; the second is “Dead the Funeral” by Cam’ron. Both have made the mixtape rounds. The Cam’ron track, a 50 Cent diss, is surprisingly banging. I want to see white girls dance to it.
